51-year-old mother of two, Mevlüde Yıldızeli, who lives in Ankara, saw her life turn upside down in 2022.
SUDDENLY BECAME BLIND, NO ONE COULD DIAGNOSE Despite applying to many hospitals for 3 years due to sudden vision loss, Yıldızeli could not be diagnosed. Afterward, she experienced complaints of headaches, tinnitus, forgetfulness, perception disorders, and instability that caused her to fall while walking, and she finally applied to Ankara Bilkent City Hospital.
THE CAUSE WAS FOUND AFTER 3 YEARS As a result of the tests conducted here, it was determined that Mevlüde Yıldızeli had a blockage in the veins of her brain. Yıldızeli, whose veins were opened using a minimally invasive method performed by Brain Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Ergün Dağlıoğlu at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, regained her health.
"BRAIN VEIN ISSUES HAVE GAINED MOMENTUM IN THE LAST 5 YEARS" Prof. Dr. Ergün Dağlıoğlu, a Brain Surgery Specialist at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, stated that Mevlüde Yıldızeli came to them with severe pain in her head, tinnitus in her ears, and complaints of staggering while walking, saying, "In the tests conducted on our patient, she was reported to be close to normal. However, we suspected that there was a blockage in the veins of the brain during our examinations. For this reason, I suggested an angiographic examination to our patient. I indicated that her complaints might be related to this. After the explanations regarding this, she expressed her desire to undergo this procedure. We constantly perform procedures related to brain arteries, but issues related to brain veins have gained momentum, especially in the last 5 years. Blockages in brain veins can present with very serious symptoms. And even very slight narrowing in these areas can lead to very serious symptoms. We suspected this in this patient as well. Of course, these are not very high-risk procedures; because we can reach the brain veins and treat the pathologies in the area using minimally invasive methods and angiographic techniques," he said.
"THE TINNITUS SOUND DISAPPEARED IMMEDIATELY" Prof. Dr. Dağlıoğlu stated that they accessed the patient's femoral artery and vein for the procedure, saying, "We obtained images from the artery and visualized the veins. We reached the brain veins by passing through the femoral veins, near the heart. And we eliminated the blockages in the veins by performing procedures such as stent application and balloon dilation in the narrowed area of those veins. Actually, the problem in our patient was that the right hemisphere of the brain could not drain. It was the blockage of the return of the vessels in the right hemisphere of the brain to our normal heart. And we intervened exactly at the blocked area to perform this surgery. The nice thing about these types of surgeries is that our patients generally see benefits quickly. Our patient stated that the tinnitus sound in her head disappeared immediately after the surgery," he said.
"I AM THE HAPPIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD" Mevlüde Yıldızeli expressed that she suddenly experienced vision loss in 2022, saying, "I applied to many hospitals. They said it was an infection; I was treated, but it didn't go away. No results were obtained, and my attacks increased. I could no longer go anywhere alone, I started to fall while walking. I had a lot of balance issues, forgetfulness, perception problems, and restlessness. After the tests at Bilkent City Hospital, they immediately suggested an angiogram. I had been suffering a lot for 3 years, I couldn't be happy with anything, I couldn't enjoy anything; for this reason, I immediately accepted the angiogram. While performing the angiogram, they opened the blockages in my veins. When the procedure was over and I came to myself, I felt like I was reborn, like I had come back to life. Right now, I am very peaceful and happy. After the angiogram, the sounds in my head disappeared, my walking improved, and my perception returned. Now I am the happiest person in the world," she stated.
