A homeowner in California, USA, who became alarmed by strange noises coming from his basement, was stunned when he reviewed the footage from the cameras he had installed. A 200-pound giant bear emerged from beneath his house. The unfortunate man is now trying to remove the unexpected guest that has been living under his home for weeks.
Kenneth Johnson, who lives in Altadena, California, noticed that the bricks in his garden had been disturbed and the trash cans had been knocked over. In response, he installed motion-sensor cameras for security and encountered an unexpected surprise: a 200-pound giant bear was living in the space beneath his house.
OUT DURING THE DAY, BACK TO THE BASEMENT AT NIGHT
The cameras showed that the bear was entering and exiting the basement through a narrow 75-centimeter gap. The footage revealed that the animal was rummaging through the trash cans and displacing the bricks. The bear goes outside during the day to search for food and returns to the basement to sleep at night.
"NOT KNOWING WHERE IT IS IS QUITE CREEPY"
Johnson explained that he had noticed the gap being disturbed since June 2025, but he didn't know what was causing it for a long time. "I often see wild animals in the area, but I never expected to see one under my house," he said. He added that he first heard the bear's growling sounds while trying to change the camera's battery, saying, "Not knowing where it is is quite creepy."
HE DEVISED HIS OWN SOLUTION PLAN
Johnson contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife but did not receive a clear answer. He expressed hope that the bear would be tranquilized and relocated, but for now, he plans to handle the situation on his own. He aims to lure the bear outside with sweets and seal the gap with sandbags treated with pepper spray.
TENSION CONTINUES
In addition to Johnson, who said, "The noises coming from under the kitchen are quite unsettling," the bear's behavior is being closely monitored by both neighbors and local authorities.
