The incident took place at a wedding hall in the rural Yamaçtepe neighborhood of Şahinbey district in Gaziantep on August 26. According to allegations, the 27-year-old groom Yemlihan Kızıltoprak had a brief argument with his cousin Mehmet O. whom he invited to the henna night celebration. After the argument, Mehmet O. was sent away from the wedding and he informed his brothers about the situation, asking them to come to the wedding.
As a result, a group of individuals arrived at the wedding venue with hammers and sticks and brutally attacked the groom Yemlihan Kızıltoprak who was dancing on the dance floor. The groom suffered severe injuries to his head and various parts of his body due to the blows.
Upon receiving the report, numerous emergency medical and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene. While the gendarmerie teams separated the parties involved, the medical teams provided initial treatment to the severely injured groom Yemlihan Kızıltoprak and then transferred him to the hospital. It was learned that the groom, who received blows to his head, was fighting for his life in the intensive care unit.
The moments of the attack, in which the groom was severely injured, were captured on the security cameras in the wedding hall. The footage showed the group, who invaded the wedding hall with trucks, rushing into the crowd of people dancing the halay with sticks and iron bars and attacking the groom. The footage also showed that later on, the groom was taken away from the scene by his relatives and the individuals with the bars continued to chase him. The groom and his family filed a complaint against the attackers, while the guests experienced great fear and panic.
Ahmet Kızıltoprak, the father of the groom, who described the incident, said that there was no animosity between them. Ahmet Kızıltoprak stated, "Yesterday, we had our son's henna night and our relatives and nephews came. They had a minor argument over the halay dance at the wedding. Then a minor incident occurred. We separated everyone and sent him home. However, instead of going home, he called all his relatives and the workers he was with, and they came with 15 cars and 20 people and invaded our wedding. They also beat up our son. Our son is currently in the intensive care unit, he hasn't woken up yet. They are his sister's children. We have no animosity or debt issues with anyone."
Ahmet Kızıltoprak, who said that they went together to the dowry, marriage proposal, and henna night, and that even his nephew bought the bride's dessert, stated, "We went together to the dowry, marriage proposal, and henna night. His nephew even bought the bride's dessert. He called all his brothers and 8-10 workers for a minor argument he had with the groom. They came with hammers, bars, and irons and ruined our wedding. They disrupted the wedding and put the groom in a coma. The groom had surgery and is currently in the intensive care unit. They should pay for what they did. If anyone can come and disrupt a wedding like this, others will do the same at another wedding. They will be held accountable for what they did according to the law," he said.
Ercüment Kızıltoprak, the groom's older brother, who stated that such a thing should not have happened on the happiest day of the groom, said, "We were sitting at the same table with our cousin's son. We were having fun together. There was no problem or issue between us. When my brother invited him to join the halay dance, he was probably expecting a job. When my brother took his phone away, he got angry and said something inappropriate. After my brother reacted, he turned the chair and it hit his head. There was a minor argument when the chair hit his head. We separated them, talked nicely, and sent our cousin's son home."
"There is no animosity between us. I am someone who is constantly with him, eating and drinking together. We talk almost every day. There is no debt or animosity between us. These incidents should not have happened. He himself probably didn't expect it to escalate to this point. The consequences are there after a moment of anger. Everyone has regrets from start to finish. It shouldn't have happened, but it did. Such a thing should not have happened on the happiest day of the groom. He may have stopped later, but his children didn't. People suffer the consequences of a moment of anger for a lifetime. It applies to both sides. No one is happy. I am also sorry for my brother's condition. I am sorry for them too. After all, they are also our relatives," he said.
Meanwhile, the attackers involved in the incident were captured by the gendarmerie, and 7 of the suspects were arrested after being referred to the judicial authorities. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
