46-year-old Antje Kirscht, who works as a nurse in Germany, decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey as a result of her research. Weighing 110 kilograms, the woman sought treatment for obesity at a private hospital in Antalya. DOCTORS COULDN'T FIND HER STOMACHThe woman stated that she was diagnosed in Germany with the possibility of her organs being reversed, which surprised the doctors during the operation. The surgical team found the patient's stomach, which should normally be on the left side, behind the liver on the right side. While the gastric sleeve operation was successfully performed, it was noted that such a case occurs only once in every 100,000. "WHEN WE LIFTED THE LIVER, WE SAW THE STOMACH"Prof. Dr. Alihan Gürkan, the head of the General Surgery Department who performed the surgery, stated that the patient had a different anomaly, saying, "It is said to occur once in every 100,000. All organs can be reversed. This is more common, but in this patient, all organs are in their place, but only the stomach has shifted to the right. It has gone behind the liver. When we started the operation, we couldn't find the stomach. When we lifted the liver, we saw the stomach on the right side. This is a very rare situation. According to 2023 data, such a gastric sleeve surgery has only been performed on 50 people worldwide. We successfully performed this case as well. It was a surgery that challenged us technically but increased our experience." "WE MADE A MIRROR IMAGE OF THE OPERATION"Prof. Dr. Gürkan elaborated on the details of the surgery, stating, "We made a mirror image of the gastric sleeve operation. Normally, we perform obesity surgery on the left side, but in this patient, we performed it on the right side. The stomach being behind the liver extended the operation time by 15 minutes, and it lasted a total of 1 hour. It was a pleasant coincidence for us as well." "I DIDN'T EXPECT TO ENCOUNTER SUCH A THING"German patient Antje Kirscht, who stated that it was her first time coming to Turkey alone, mentioned that her doctor in Germany told her that some of her organs were reversed, but he explained it as something normal. Expressing her surprise at the situation, Kirscht said, "I didn't expect to encounter such a thing. I was very surprised when I learned that my stomach was on the right side after the surgery, but the process was managed so professionally that I didn't feel anxious. I feel very good and I want to come back to Turkey." 30-40 KILOS ARE EXPECTED TO BE LOST IN 6 MONTHSProf. Dr. Gürkan stated that patients who undergo gastric sleeve surgery lose 30-40% of their weight within the first 6-8 months, saying, "Antje's starting weight is 110. She is expected to lose 30-40 kilograms within 6 months. However, diet is very important after the surgery. Patients must take care of themselves during this process."
