A citizen in Neuville-sur-Saône, France, discovered gold bars and coins worth approximately 700,000 euros while digging a swimming pool in their garden. The municipality shared the extraordinary find with the public in a statement on Wednesday, November 5.

GOLD FOUND IN PLASTIC BAGS

According to the Neuville-sur-Saône Municipality, the discovery was made in May. Following the incident, the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) was informed. According to Le Progrès newspaper, the treasure consisted of five gold bars and numerous coins. All the gold was found buried in the ground inside plastic bags.

"NOT AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE"

Authorities determined that the findings were not an archaeological artifact as a result of the examinations. Therefore, the treasure was allowed to remain with the finder. The municipality stated that the treasure was obtained legally and was melted down at a company in the Lyon region approximately 15 to 20 years ago.

ORIGIN REMAINS A MYSTERY

It was learned that the former owner of the land where the gold was found has passed away. This situation has raised questions about the ownership of the treasure. Although the police investigation is trying to determine the source of the gold, the origin of the loot remains a mystery.
