A historic step has been taken towards lifting the headscarf ban in secondary schools in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Following the incident last week where a girl attending İrsen Küçük Secondary School was not allowed to enter the school with her headscarf, the TRNC Council of Ministers signed a new decision. With the change in the dress code regulation made by the Ministry of National Education, students in secondary schools in the TRNC who wish to do so now have the right to attend school wearing a "bonnet" or "bandana".
"WE HAVE OVERCOME THE BAN APPLIED IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS"
In statements regarding the issue to Sabah, the TRNC Minister of National Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu said, "We did not have a headscarf issue in our high schools and universities. With this decision we have made, we have, in a sense, overcome the ban applied in secondary schools, may it be beneficial."
THEY HAD NOT ALLOWED THE HEADSCARFED GIRL TO SCHOOL
Last week, a girl student in her final year at İrsen Küçük Secondary School in the TRNC came to school wearing a headscarf. The school administration did not allow the girl to enter because she refused to remove her headscarf and was asked to go to the Theology College. Following the incident that became a hot topic on the island, the issue was brought to the agenda of the TRNC Council of Ministers.
THE DECISION WAS PUBLISHED IN THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE
The TRNC Ministry of National Education proposed a change in the dress code regulation to the government. The accepted change was published in the Official Gazette and came into effect. The decision taken will be implemented in all secondary schools in the TRNC starting today.
