With the noticeable increase in air temperatures across Turkey, the tick population continues to rise. The increasing cases of ticks in Central Anatolia, along with rising temperatures, also bring the risk of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) disease.
Prof. Dr. İlhan Çetin, a faculty member of the Department of Public Health at Sivas Cumhuriyet University, explained how to detect ticks in open areas, stating that people can identify the presence of ticks by moving a light-colored cloth in a green area. He said, "After laying the cloth, if you step on it and move a little, any ticks in the area will likely come due to the vibrations caused."
"CAN BE DETECTED WITH A WHITE CLOTH" Prof. Dr. Çetin emphasized that one of the most important precautions regarding ticks is to determine whether there are ticks in the area, stating, "One of the most important precautions to take is to detect whether there is a tick population in the area we are in beforehand. People will, of course, have picnics and engage in activities in open areas and socialize. When they spread a light-colored or white cloth in the area where they will be active, if there are ticks in that area, they can be detected.
After laying the cloth, if you step on it and move a little, if there are any ticks in the area, they will likely come towards the cloth, thinking that a human or animal has arrived due to the vibrations. If there are ticks in the environment, they will most likely come. However, their absence does not mean that there are no ticks in that environment. If there are ticks in the area we are in, we will definitely be aware and leave. Light-colored clothing, pants that cover the body, long-sleeved shirts, and shirts with cuffs and buttons are preferred. If there are ticks in the area we are in, we have a chance to notice them on our clothes and the clothes of the people we are with before they attach to our bodies," he said.
"A TICK MUST SUCK BLOOD FROM A HUMAN" Çetin stated that if there is a hungry tick in the area, it will find the individual without the individual needing to find the tick, saying, "Tucking the pant legs into socks is an important precaution to prevent ticks from entering our bodies from the pant legs. Ticks have three phases after hatching: larva, nymph, and adult. In each of these stages, a tick must suck blood from either an animal or a human. If there is a hungry tick, it will come to you without you needing to go to it. It is impossible to say how many ticks will come to you. However, dozens of ticks that sense your presence will come towards you. It is not just one tick that will attach. Dozens of ticks can attach to a person and start sucking blood," he said.
