Following a series of death reports in Istanbul, inspections for counterfeit alcohol have intensified. Most recently, an operation conducted in a shop in Beyoğlu, where water was being sold, resulted in the seizure of 72 liters of fake alcohol. The teams opened each bottle one by one to smell and check them, while the shop owner was arrested.
While counterfeit alcohol has claimed the lives of 38 people in Istanbul in four days, 46 others are still receiving treatment in hospitals. Most recently, 72 liters of counterfeit alcohol were seized in a shop selling water in Beyoğlu.
RAID ON THE BUSINESS
Teams from the District Police Department's Public Order Bureau initiated an operation due to the increase in deaths caused by illegal and counterfeit alcohol. The teams, who determined that counterfeit alcohol was being produced in a shop selling water in Fetihtepe Neighborhood, detained the shop owner Y.K. (53) during the operation they conducted at the address.
ARRESTED
While the teams opened and smelled the barrels one by one, 72 liters of counterfeit alcohol were seized during the search. After their procedures at the police station, the suspect, who was sent to the Istanbul Courthouse, was arrested by the judge. Meanwhile, the shop was sealed by municipal teams.
A TOTAL OF 11 PEOPLE ARRESTED
Among the 8 suspects detained for allegedly causing the deaths of 6 people by engaging in the trade of counterfeit alcohol in 8 districts of Istanbul, 2 more were arrested. Thus, the number of those arrested in operations against those involved in the trade and production of counterfeit alcohol has risen to 11.
