Residents of the buildings, who experienced great fear at the time of the incident, shared their experiences.
RESIDENTS EXPERIENCED GREAT PANIC
The incident occurred around 5:30 AM in the Anadolu neighborhood of Arnavutköy. According to the information obtained, the retaining wall between the two buildings collapsed for an unknown reason. After the collapse, pieces of the wall fell into the building's void, causing structural damage to both buildings. Residents who noticed the incident experienced great panic, and police, municipal police, and municipal teams were dispatched to the area. In the inspection conducted by the teams, it was determined that a part of the upper section of the wall was used as a balcony, and cracks had formed in the lower floors as a result of the collapse. For safety reasons, evacuation procedures were initiated in the buildings. While municipal teams took security measures in the area, the area where the collapse occurred and the damage to the buildings were captured by drone from the air.
"IT FELT LIKE AN EARTHQUAKE"
Describing the moments, resident Nurten Taşçı said, "We were sleeping at 5:36 AM. There was a sound, and I asked my husband what it was. He said, 'It thundered,' but that sound was not like thunder. The wall of the building behind us had collapsed. We were very scared. There are damages on the lower floor, and the police asked us to evacuate the house. I think they will place us in a hotel. We took our important belongings and are evacuating the house. It felt like an earthquake; we literally jumped into the air. Fortunately, no one was injured," she said.
