On the island of Chios in Greece, the Resurrection Night of Jesus celebrated as part of the Easter Festival was colored by the traditional "Rocket War." As every year, the congregations of the Ayios Markos and Panayia Erithiani churches in the Vrontados neighborhood competed with handmade rockets this year as well.
SECURITY MEASURES TAKEN BY MUNICIPAL TEAMS
As part of the holiday preparations, security measures were taken by municipal teams in areas where rockets might fall; the surroundings of the buildings were closed off with barbed wire. Firefighting teams were also deployed in the area as a precaution against fire risks.
ROCKETS FIRED IN TURN
In the evening hours, young people gathered in the shelters set up in the lower sections of the churches and fired the rockets they placed on the ramps in turn. Visitors who wanted to watch this colorful display, which illuminated the sky and broke the silence of the night, took their places on the slopes of Mount Epos in the upper part of the Vrontados neighborhood.
THEY TRIED TO HIT THE BELL TOWER
During the rocket launches that lasted until 00:00, the young people tried to hit the bell tower of the opposing church with handmade rockets on which they had written their team names. Teams quickly intervened in the small fires that broke out due to the rockets. This tradition, which has been ongoing for centuries, continues to attract the interest of thousands of people every year.
