After the corpses of two deceased citizens were mixed up in the morgue and one was mistakenly buried in the Erzin district, the grave was reopened by a prosecutor's decision. Expressing deep sorrow over the scandal, the university's rectorate announced that a comprehensive administrative investigation has been launched into the incident.
A baffling funeral mix-up occurred at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Research and Application Hospital. The bodies of two citizens, Yusuf K. and Ismail U., who died at the hospital, were swapped in the morgue.
THE WRONG BODY WAS BURIED
The incident came to light when Yusuf K.'s relatives noticed that the body they received from the morgue did not belong to their family member. After the family immediately reported the situation to authorities, an investigation revealed that Yusuf K.'s body had been handed over to the other family and had already been buried in the Erzin district.
THE GRAVE WAS OPENED ON PROSECUTOR'S ORDERS
Following the discovery of the error, the prosecutor's office intervened. In line with the given orders, the grave in Erzin was reopened, Yusuf K.'s body was retrieved, and it was handed over to his real family.
RECTORATE LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION
After the scandal, the Rectorate of Hatay Mustafa Kemal University issued a written statement announcing that an administrative investigation had been launched. The rectorate's statement included the following:
"The incident of swapped bodies that occurred at our hospital and was reflected in the public has deeply saddened us. Immediately upon learning of the situation, our Rectorate initiated an administrative investigation, ensuring that the process is conducted meticulously in all its aspects. Once the investigation is complete, the results will be shared with the public. All necessary measures will be decisively taken to prevent a similar incident from recurring."
