"ONE OF THE 5 SHEPHERDS WE RESCUED HAS DIED"
Yavuz explained that efforts are being made to rescue those trapped on the roads due to heavy snowfall in the city, stating, "We are monitoring the operations at the Provincial Disaster and Emergency Management Authority's Disaster Coordination Center. Currently, there are no citizens trapped in the city. Our priority is that no one is trapped. Unfortunately, one of the five shepherds we rescued from the mountains in Hekimhan district has died in the hospital. Our sorrow is deep; we hope to receive no more sad news from now on," he said.
In a statement made by the governorship, it was noted that due to the heavy snowfall affecting the city, the state roads in the directions of Malatya-Kayseri and Malatya-Sivas were closed to traffic, and the safe evacuation of citizens trapped on the roads due to adverse weather conditions is ongoing. The statement mentioned that 127 people in 38 vehicles trapped on the Hekimhan-Sivas highway, 100 people in 42 vehicles trapped on the Darende-Gürün road, 60 people in 20 vehicles trapped in the Darende-Çayirdüzü area, and 75 people in 25 vehicles trapped on the Arapgir highway were rescued and transported to the district center.
787 CITIZENS PLACED IN GUESTHOUSES
In the statement shared, it was noted that 787 citizens who were trapped on the road and rescued were placed in public guesthouses in the district center: "Five of our citizens who work as shepherds in Hekimhan and Darende districts were trapped in the mountains, and our rescue teams successfully rescued five of our citizens after a challenging struggle in the field, but one of our citizens could not be saved and died in the hospital. I would like to thank especially our Metropolitan Municipality, our Regional Directorate of Highways, and the Red Crescent for their intense efforts during these operations. It is of utmost importance for our citizens to be careful against heavy snowfall and the risk of icing, to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary, and to ensure that vehicles going out on the road are equipped with winter tires."
On the other hand, Metropolitan Mayor Sami Er stated that all teams are mobilized in coordination with relevant institutions and organizations for citizens trapped in some neighborhoods of Darende, Hekimhan, Arapgir, and Akçadağ districts, and noted that the work would be completed quickly to reach the citizens.
