SCHOOLS IN ISTANBUL CLOSED FOR TWO DAYS DUE TO EARTHQUAKE
An earthquake measuring 6.2 occurred in Istanbul on Wednesday, April 23. Following the earthquake, numerous aftershocks were experienced, and education was suspended for two days across the city. With the addition of the weekend holiday, students in Istanbul did not attend school for four days.
FIRST LESSON AFTER THE BREAK: "DISASTER AWARENESS TRAINING"
After the four-day break, education in Istanbul will resume on Monday, April 28. The Provincial Directorate of National Education announced that the first lesson on Monday will be "Disaster Awareness Training" in all public and private schools across the city.
In the statement made by the directorate, it was mentioned that students will be taught the correct behaviors during earthquakes and other disasters, and basic information such as the "drop, cover, hold on" practice, preparing an emergency kit, and the importance of gathering areas will be shared.
In the statement, Provincial Director of National Education Murat Mücahit Yentür emphasized the importance of preparedness for disasters. Yentür stated that they have determined the first lesson on Monday in all public and private schools in the city as "Disaster Awareness Training," saying, "Our main goal here is to emphasize that education is the most important aspect regarding potential disasters. With awareness-raising activities, we aim to both reduce disaster risks and raise individuals who are prepared for disasters. We continuously keep disaster awareness alive as a natural part of our education and training process. On Monday, we will conduct an awareness activity with our teachers to ensure that our children learn the precautions that can be taken before, during, and after a disaster."
"WE WILL MAKE OUR FAMILIES MORE AWARE OF DISASTERS"
Yentür stated that disaster awareness will not be limited to students, and added: "In the upcoming process, until the end of the year, we will include all our School Family Association presidents and board members in the 'Disaster Awareness Training' module prepared by the General Directorate of Lifelong Learning of our Ministry of National Education. With this 16-hour certified program, we aim to make our families more aware of disasters. As the education community, we will continue our work with determination, without forgetting that we are a strong family that has always managed to be united in extraordinary situations like disasters."
