The aftershocks of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul on April 23 are continuing. While 266 aftershocks have been recorded, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan provided information about the progression of the aftershocks via social media. Ercan stated that most of the tension has shifted towards the east, towards Büyükçekmece.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred yesterday off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara. Following the 13-second earthquake, there were 266 aftershocks, the largest of which was 5.9. Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan provided information about the course of the aftershocks through a social media post.
Sharing a map of the aftershocks and accumulation areas, and providing an assessment based on this map, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan used striking expressions.
"TENSION HAS SHIFTED EASTWARD"
Ercan stated, "There are interesting developments in North Marmara. Yesterday, the epicenter shifted from Silivri towards Büyükçekmece, and today the small earthquakes began to line up towards Marmara Ereğlisi in the western branch. This was the expected situation. It is clear that most of the tension transfer has shifted eastward towards B. Çekmece."
"AFTERSHOCKS HAVE GREATLY RELIEVED TENSION"
On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Ercan, in a previous statement, said, "We will see these types of earthquakes before a major earthquake comes. While I expected the aftershocks to last for two weeks, the aftershocks that occurred in the morning and afternoon have greatly relieved the tension above."
"A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE WILL NOT FOLLOW"
Ercan, who said, "The earthquake either dragged or broke the ground for about 25 kilometers," added, "While the direction should normally be east and west, it has only moved towards Istanbul. It is currently shifting towards Istanbul. This earthquake, which started from the Trakya Eskişehir fault, has reached the Büyükçekmece Çatalca fault. I do not expect it to continue towards Istanbul from now on. It is reaching a great calm. I am not expecting a major earthquake to follow this."
"THE BIG ISTANBUL EARTHQUAKE WILL NOT HAPPEN BEFORE 2045"
Providing a date for the expected major Istanbul earthquake, Prof. Dr. Ercan stated, "This is not the major Istanbul earthquake we are expecting. We still have time for that. Therefore, I do not think it will happen before 2045 and 2065."
