The lack of telephone and internet infrastructure in Kargın Neighborhood, Eskişehir, which has a population of 200, complicates daily life. Residents say they have to go to other villages even to call for help in emergencies.

The lack of telephone and internet infrastructure in the Kargın Neighborhood, located 40 kilometers from the city center with a population of 200, negatively impacts daily life. Residents state that they even have to go to other villages to call the 112 Emergency Call Center in emergencies, while headman Musa Sürücü (63) said that due to the lack of telephone and internet, the young population has moved to the city center, and the number of households is decreasing day by day.

Telephone and Internet

LACK OF PHONE AND INTERNET MAKES LIFE DIFFICULT

The lack of telephone and internet infrastructure in the rural Kargın Neighborhood, affiliated with the Odunpazarı district, negatively affects the daily lives of residents. Citizens stated that they cannot even communicate healthily among themselves, and in emergencies, they can only reach the 112 Emergency Call Center by going to another neighborhood. Headman of Kargın Neighborhood, Musa Sürücü, stated that after their applications, officials conducted an inspection in the neighborhood and determined that there is no telephone and internet infrastructure.

Headman

“PEOPLE ARE MOVING BACK BECAUSE THERE IS NO INTERNET”

Describing that residents climb to high points like roofs and minarets to search for a phone signal, Headman Sürücü said, "I think our village is a bit in a hollow. This problem is less experienced in neighboring villages, but due to the lack of a transmitter in our village, we experience many problems with the phone. We can't have voice calls; the sound doesn't go back and forth. Especially with video calls or internet, there are problems; connecting to the internet is very difficult. The signal keeps going up and down but cannot be reached; neither internet nor phone works. There is no infrastructure in our neighborhood; I submitted a petition to the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK). A response came from the petition saying 'It will be investigated.' Two experts came and investigated from 7 points. They reported that the phone line does not work at all. Children don't come just because the phone doesn't work; the internet situation ruins it. Without internet, people don't stay permanently; they come, do their work, and want to leave immediately. People are moving back because the internet doesn't work. So, the lack of internet and phone reduces life in the village, and therefore the population decreases day by day," he said.

Village Life

“WE REQUEST A TRANSMITTER BE INSTALLED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE”

Stating that in an emergency, residents have to go to other neighborhoods to call the 112 Emergency Call Center, Sürücü said, "In some places in the village, it works, but when it does, either the sound doesn't come or doesn't go. We have a minaret in our mosque; one person used it from there; it works a bit better there, there is some connection there, but in an emergency, they might think of it or not; they use a neighboring village. There is a neighboring village; they find it there. For example, to give an address to an ambulance, they can't be understood because of the sound; they go by car to where the phone works and handle the urgency that way. When I go out and walk around the village, I see someone with a ladder trying to talk on the phone on the roof. I see someone else trying to climb the minaret. We request from the authorities that a transmitter be installed as soon as possible to resolve our hardship; we would be happy. The village would really rejoice," he said.

Minaret

“ONLY ONE BAR ON TOP OF THE MINARET”

Resident Hasan Erdi Öz (29) stated that due to the lack of telephone and internet infrastructure, no one wants to stay in the village, saying, "Our only problem is the phone signal issue. Forget internet; our phones don't even get a signal. Our request is for the phone to work. After the phone works, we'll try to manage the internet somehow, but should we climb the minaret? Only one bar works on top of the minaret. We go by car to the far side of Sofça village, find someone there, and make calls to call 112," he said.

Elderly Woman

“I CAN’T VIDEO CALL MY GRANDCHILD”

Halime Koç (71) also stated that they have great difficulty due to the lack of phone and internet, saying:

"We miss someone and say 'Let's talk,' but either my voice doesn't reach them or their voice doesn't reach me; we can't talk. We have the phone in our hand and run around asking 'Where will it work?' My three-year-old grandchild calls me a lot and says 'Grandma, video call,' but we can't have a video call. My older grandchild doesn't come at all; they don't want to come because the internet doesn't work."

Searching for Husband

“WHEN I CAN’T REACH MY HUSBAND, I SEARCH THE STREETS”

Resident Şaziye Ertaş (60) said she cannot reach her husband because the phone doesn't work, saying, "Our village has many problems. My grandchild used to come when they were little, but now I can't bring them. They say 'Grandma, no phone, no internet; I can't go to the village.' When I can't reach my husband, I go out and search street by street in the village. I get worried and anxious," she said.
