The pilot of JetBlue Airways flight 1112 reported that they narrowly avoided a mid-air collision with a U.S. Air Force aircraft near Venezuela.
A passenger plane was almost involved in a mid-air collision with a U.S. Air Force aircraft. The pilot of JetBlue Airways flight 1112 stated that they maneuvered to avoid a collision with a U.S. Air Force aircraft near Venezuela.
THEY ESCAPED A DISASTER
The incident occurred approximately 64 kilometers off the coast of Venezuela while the Airbus A320 passenger plane was flying from the Caribbean country of Curaçao to New York City in the United States.
The JetBlue pilot, in a radio conversation with air traffic control, indicated that the U.S. fighter jet was a few kilometers away and at the same altitude, saying, "They passed directly through our flight path. Their transponders are off. This is ridiculous. We were almost colliding in the air." The JetBlue pilot noted that the U.S. fighter jet later entered Venezuelan airspace.
"WE REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES"
In a statement, JetBlue said, "Our crew is trained in appropriate procedures for various flight situations, and we thank them for promptly reporting this situation to our management team. We have reported this incident to federal authorities and will participate in any investigations." The U.S. Southern Command stated that they are aware of the incident and have initiated an investigation.
