In Kayseri, Iranian businessman Mahdi Gholamaıan made a striking defense in the trial where he is accused of killing his brother-in-law by shooting him with a gun. Gholamaıan denied the allegations, claiming that the incident was a suicide, not a murder. The expert witness in the case also stated that he found no evidence indicating that the defendant had fired a shot during the incident.

Mahdi Gholamaıan (40), an Iranian businessman who was arrested on charges of killing his brother-in-law Rasoul Gholamaıan (31) by shooting him in the head during an argument in Kayseri, is being tried with a request for life imprisonment. In the case, Prof. Dr. Çağlar Özdemir, a faculty member of the Forensic Medicine Department at Erciyes University, was heard as an expert witness.

EXPERT WITNESS SAID "SUICIDE"

Özdemir, who reenacted the incident with a toy gun, stated, "If your committee deems it appropriate, I can share my thoughts. I found no evidence that the shot was fired by the defendant. Therefore, I reported it this way. I believe it was a suicide."

ARGUMENT ENDED IN BLOOD

The incident occurred on December 27 of last year at a house in the Alpaslan neighborhood of the Melikgazi district. An argument broke out between Mahdi Gholamaıan and his brother-in-law Rasoul Gholamaıan. In the escalating argument, Rasoul Gholamaıan was shot in the head with a gun. Upon neighbors' notification, police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. Health officials determined that Gholamaıan had died. Mahdi Gholamaıan was taken into custody by the police on suspicion of murder. Rasoul Gholamaıan's body was sent to Iran after autopsy procedures. Mahdi Gholamaıan, who was taken into custody, was arrested by the court to which he was referred after his procedures at the police station.

INDICTMENT PREPARED

The investigation conducted by the Kayseri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has been completed, and an indictment has been prepared. In the indictment accepted by the Kayseri Heavy Penal Court, life imprisonment was requested for Mahdi Gholamaıan.

"I AM NOT A BROTHER KILLER"

During the second hearing of the case at the Kayseri Heavy Penal Court, the detained defendant Mahdi Gholamaıan was present along with the complainant mother, father, and sister of Rasoul Gholamaıan, as well as the parties' lawyers. Mahdi Gholamaıan, who explained that the deceased Rasoul Gholamaıan was both his cousin and his wife's brother, claimed his innocence, stating, "I did not kill Rasoul. He committed suicide. He was my brother. His joy was my joy, and his sorrow was my sorrow. We had a very different relationship. He was like a brother to me. I am not a brother killer."

The deceased Rasoul's mother, F.G., stated, "I want my son's blood to not go unpunished. I am a complainant."

EXPERT WITNESS IN THE CASES OF DUYGU DELEN AND ŞULE ÇET

During the hearing, Prof. Dr. Çağlar Özdemir from the Forensic Medicine Department at Erciyes University was heard as an expert witness. Prof. Dr. Özdemir, who stated that he has provided opinions in significant cases across many parts of Turkey, reenacted the incident with a toy gun and explained all the details to the court. Prof. Dr. Çağlar Özdemir said, "I have been working on crime scenes and their reenactments for 18 years. I have reports in many media-covered cases across Turkey. I have served as an expert in similar cases. I provided the reports for the Duygu Delen and Şule Çet cases."

"I FOUND NO EVIDENCE THAT THE SHOT WAS FIRED BY THE DEFENDANT"

Prof. Dr. Özdemir also stated that the legal evaluation of the incident should be made by legal experts, saying, "Since the assessment of the incident as an accident, suicide, or murder falls within the domain of legal experts, I did not make such an evaluation in my report. If your committee deems it appropriate, I can share my thoughts. I found no evidence that the shot was fired by the defendant. Therefore, I reported it this way. I believe it was a suicide. But I leave the discretion to you."

TRIAL ADJOURNED

The court panel decided to continue the detention of the defendant Mahdi Gholamaıan and adjourned the trial upon the request of the prosecutor to prepare an opinion.
