In the investigation regarding the discovery of the lifeless bodies of three siblings who went missing in Sancaktepe in the water-filled foundation of a construction site, an indictment has been prepared against the then Director of the Department of Science Affairs, Ahmet Özgen, on the charge of 'causing the death of multiple people through negligence,' with a request for a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
In 2023, regarding the discovery of the lifeless bodies of three siblings in the water-filled foundation of a construction site in Sancaktepe, Istanbul, an indictment was prepared against Ahmet Özgen, the then Director of the Department of Science Affairs of the Sancaktepe Municipality, with a request for up to 15 years in prison.
In the indictment prepared by the Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that after the fire department pumped out the rainwater accumulation in the area where the construction foundation next to a high school was located, the bodies of the missing children were found.
According to the autopsy report in the indictment, the cause of death was determined to be drowning, and according to the expert report, it was stated that Ahmet Özgen, who was serving as the Director of the Department of Science Affairs of the Sancaktepe Municipality on the date of the incident, was at fault.
REQUEST FOR PRISON SENTENCE OF 2 TO 15 YEARS
In the indictment, a causal link was established between the children's deaths and Özgen's failure to fulfill his duty of care and diligence. It was noted that Özgen did not take sufficient measures to prevent unauthorized persons from entering the empty foundation at the construction site and did not make any attempts to remove the water accumulation.
In the indictment, which requested a prison sentence of 2 to 15 years for the suspect Ahmet Özgen for the crime of "causing the death of multiple persons by negligence," was accepted by the Anadolu Criminal Court of First Instance.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Following the disappearance of 7-year-old Berat, 9-year-old Baran, and 11-year-old Batuhan Sağın, who were playing near Karşıyaka Street in the Hilal neighborhood of Sancaktepe on the evening of October 4, 2023, a search operation was initiated.
While the search was ongoing, an employee of a construction site on Gülpembe Street reported to the police that he had seen a child's body in the water-filled foundation of the construction site, and after the water was drained, the bodies of the three children were recovered.
