In the Narin Güran murder case in Diyarbakır, Nevzat Bahtiyar, whose 4.5-year prison sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for "aiding qualified intentional murder" in the retrial of his case.
The retrial of Nevzat Bahtiyar has begun after the Supreme Court of Appeals 1st Criminal Chamber overturned the 4 years and 6 months prison sentence given for the crime of "destroying, concealing, or altering evidence of a crime" in relation to the death of 8-year-old Narin Güran, whose lifeless body was found 19 days after she went missing in Diyarbakır. In the hearing, the court panel sentenced Bahtiyar to 17 years in prison.
NEVZAT BAHTİYAR HAD RECEIVED A 4 YEAR 6 MONTH SENTENCE
Regarding the killing of Narin Güran, who went missing in Tavşantepe Neighborhood of the central Bağlar district on August 21, 2024, and whose lifeless body was found in Eğertutmaz Stream on September 8, 2024, the detained defendants mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran had been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'jointly intentional killing of a child', while Nevzat Bahtiyar had been sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of 'destroying, concealing, or altering evidence of a crime'.
THE SUPREME COURT OF APPEALS HAD OVERTURNED THE DECISION
The Diyarbakır Regional Court of Justice 1st Criminal Chamber had found the verdict given to the defendants by the court of first instance to be in accordance with the law. The Republic Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court of Appeals had requested the approval of the aggravated life sentences given to mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran, and the 4 years and 6 months prison sentence given to Nevzat Bahtiyar in the Narin Güran murder case. The Supreme Court of Appeals 1st Criminal Chamber approved the aggravated life imprisonment sentences given to the detained defendants mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran, but overturned the 4 years and 6 months prison sentence given to Nevzat Bahtiyar on the grounds that it should be evaluated within the scope of 'aiding the crime of qualified intentional murder'.
HE WAS BROUGHT BACK TO COURT
The retrial of Nevzat Bahtiyar began last week at the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court. After the defenses were made, the court had postponed the hearing until today. Nevzat Bahtiyar, his lawyers, and the Güran family attended the hearing held again today.
NEVZAT BAHTİYAR WAS SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS IN PRISON
In the courtroom, Narin's father Arif Güran and relatives of the Güran family, defendant Nevzat Bahtiyar and his relatives, and lawyers for the defendants and witnesses were present. Additionally, a large number of gendarmerie and police riot squad teams were placed in the courtroom. The 9th High Criminal Court rejected the request for recusal of judges made by Arif Güran's lawyers. The court panel sentenced Nevzat Bahtiyar, who was retried, to 17 years in prison for aiding the crime of qualified intentional murder.
