In the fourth hearing of the case where the managers and members of the Newborn Gang are being tried, detained defendant Mustafa Kemal Zengin, who threatened Prosecutor Yavuz Engin in his office, made his defense.
The trial of 58 defendants, who are members and managers of the Newborn Gang that provided unfair profits by transferring babies to hospitals they had agreements with and caused their deaths through negligent behavior, continued. On the second day of the fourth hearing held at the Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court, Mustafa Kemal Zengin, who threatened Prosecutor Yavuz Engin in his office, made his defense.
"THERE WAS NO THREAT, I TOLD THE PROSECUTOR WHAT PEOPLE CAN DO IN A MOMENT OF MADNESS"
Detained defendant Zengin stated, "I do not know anyone involved in this incident. I do not know how I got involved in this event. One day, my friend of 20 years, Yavuz Çelik, told me that Tuğçe Toptemel had been arrested. I told my friend, lawyer Aylin, about this situation. Aylin said, 'Let's go, my prosecutor friend.' I expressed my grievances to the Prosecutor. I did not say to release Tuğçe. There is no threat; I only told the prosecutor what people can do in a moment of madness," he said.
"I WENT TO HELP THE PROSECUTOR"
Defendant Zengin continued his defense, saying, "A dawn operation was carried out to silence me. I have been in a solitary cell for 7 months. Blood came from my mouth and nose in my cell. I went to the doctor; I had my image on TV as part of the newborn baby gang. The doctor looked at the TV and then at me. He gave me an appointment for 2 months later. I went to seek justice, to help the prosecutor. I have not witnessed any actions of the people here. I do not even know who is a doctor and who is a nurse. I made masks. I made the mask that Merkel wore. Why am I here, why am I being tried for threats? I went to the prosecutor as a party to the issue," he stated.
"I AM AWARE THAT MY TONE WAS WRONG"
In his defense, Zengin said, "Tuğçe Toptemel's father told me, 'They have taken our daughter inside; we need a good criminal lawyer, can you help?' I believed in Tuğçe Toptemel's innocence. Surely, a nurse earning minimum wage cannot be someone who defrauds the state. I just saw an injustice and went to the prosecutor to correct it. I am aware that my tone was wrong while speaking with the prosecutor. For this reason, I apologized before as well," he expressed.
THE HEARING WILL CONTINUE ON APRIL 24
After the completion of the defense of Mustafa Kemal Zengin, who threatened Prosecutor Yavuz Engin in his office on the second day of the fourth hearing held at the Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court, the hearing was postponed to April 24 at 10:00 AM. The hearing will continue with the defendants' defenses.
The presiding judge concluded the hearing by stating, "The hearing was postponed to April 24 due to April 23 being a public holiday. Let us take this opportunity to celebrate the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day," and ended the session.
