Ahmet Özer, who was arrested and removed from his position as the Mayor of Esenyurt as part of the city reconciliation investigation initiated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office on charges of "terrorism," appeared before the judge once again today.
The hearing, which was supposed to take place at the Istanbul 14th Heavy Penal Court, started around 10:40 in courtroom number 2 across from the Marmara Closed Penal Institutions in Silivri due to the inadequacy of the courtroom.
UP TO 15 YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT SOUGHT
In the prosecutor's opinion regarding the merits of the case, it was requested that Ahmet Özer be sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 7.5 years to 15 years for the crime of being a member of an armed terrorist organization.
HEARING POSTPONED TO JANUARY 25
During the hearing, Özer's lawyers requested additional time to prepare a defense against the prosecutor's opinion on the merits. The hearing was postponed to January 25, 2026.
ÖZER DETAINED IN A CORRUPTION CASE
The investigation, referred to as the city reconciliation, which includes some municipalities won by the CHP in the local elections held on March 31, 2024, where the DEM Party did not nominate candidates, had started last year.
Ahmet Özer, the Mayor of Esenyurt, was arrested on October 30 as part of this investigation. A release decision was made in July regarding the case against Özer on terrorism charges.
Özer could not be released from prison because he was detained in the corruption investigation known as the Aziz İhsan Aktaş case.
