India: 3 Myanmar Citizens Enter India Seeking Refuge

Amid a deadly crackdown on Myanmar anti-coup protesters, three citizens thought to be police officers crossed into neighboring India, seeking refuge, a local official said on Thursday.

The Myanmar citizens were detained in the northeastern Mizoram state.

"They have come to seek refuge and crossed the border yesterday," Kumar Abhishek, the deputy commissioner of Serchhip district, told Anadolu Agency.

He said an investigation into the matter is going on to learn the exact reason why they entered India.

"Only after we complete our inquiry can we comment further on it," said Abhishek, adding that a report was sent to the higher authorities as well.

Meanwhile, an official from the district police told Anadolu Agency on the condition of anonymity that according to preliminary information, the Myanmar citizens are policemen.

"But it is still yet to be confirmed," the official said.

It has been over a month now after the Myanmar military ousted the elected government in a coup, triggering protests against the army. -
