Housing Minister and leader of the United Torah Judaism Party, Yitzhak Goldknopf, who has threatened Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu with resignation multiple times due to the lack of a law against the conscription of Ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredi), has submitted his resignation to the government.

THEY WILL JOIN THE OPPOSITION

Goldknopf will return to the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) after submitting his resignation in protest of the failure of the bill proposed for the dissolution of the parliament to be accepted in the general assembly. The Agudat Israel, part of the United Torah Judaism Party alliance consisting of two parties, announced that its members will leave both the government and the coalition to join the opposition.

NUMBER OF SEATS DROPPED TO 64

Thus, the number of members of the Netanyahu government in the 120-seat parliament has dropped to 64. Due to the failure of the bill regarding the dissolution of the parliament to pass the preliminary vote, it cannot be brought to a vote again for 6 months.

NETANYAHU'S SON: WE ARE HAPPY

On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's son Yair stated in a post on his X account, "We are pleased he was fired! He did nothing but sell Negev and Galilee to the Arabs."

DEBATE ON CONSCRIPTION OF HAREDIS

According to Israeli laws, everyone over the age of 18 is required to perform mandatory military service, while the exemption of Haredis from military service has been a topic of debate in the country for years.

Due to the rising aggressiveness in the region, especially in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, the need for soldiers has also increased. With the resumption of attacks by breaking the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, this need is being felt seriously, and it is stated that the army needs 12,000 soldiers, including 7,000 to serve in combat zones.

The Israeli Supreme Court had ruled on June 25, 2024, that there is no legal basis for exempting Haredi men from mandatory military service and that those eligible for military service should be drafted.

Netanyahu's Haredi coalition partners were pressuring the Prime Minister to enact a military law that would exempt Haredis from military service. Haredis, who make up about 13% of the population, oppose mandatory military service and state that they dedicate their lives to Torah studies.

After the discussions, although the coalition partner Haredi parties announced that they would support the opposition's bill for the dissolution of the parliament, the Shas Party and the Torah Flag under the United Torah Judaism umbrella reached an agreement with the government, and the bill was rejected in the preliminary vote by 61 to 53 votes.
