Şanlıurfa Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Mehmet Kasım Gülpınar, geçtiğimiz aylarda Yeniden Refah Partisi'nden istifa ettiğini açıklamış, istifasını bir video mesajı ile kamuoyuna duyuran Gülpınar, görevine "bağımsız" devam etme kararı aldığını söylemişti.

Yeniden Refah Partisi Genel Başkanı Fatih Erbakan, istifadan önce Gülpınar'ın kendisini bilgilendirmediğini söylemiş, Erbakan açıklamasında partisindeki belediye başkanı düzeyindeki istifaların arkasında iktidarın baskısı karşısında "güçlü duramama" olduğu yorumunu yaptı. Fatih Erbakan, Gülpınar'ın AKP'ye katılma ihtimali için ise "Kendisi için sirk cambazı ve zübük ifadelerini kullanan bir yapıya tekrar gitmek isterse diyecek bir şey yok" ifadelerini kullanmıştı.
