Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden stated that they recognized the State of Palestine because it is the right thing to do, emphasizing that a two-state solution is the only valid path to lasting peace.
Another European country has announced that it recognizes the State of Palestine. In a speech addressing the European Parliament, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden called for the "immediate and unconditional release" of Israeli hostages on the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks.
"WE RECOGNIZE THE STATE OF PALESTINE"
Frieden expressed that they recognized the State of Palestine because it is the right thing to do, stating, "Because the two-state solution is the only valid path to lasting peace."
Frieden mentioned that Europe is facing global instability, technological and economic changes, climate change, and migration issues, and therefore is once again at a "turning point."
"WE MUST CONTINUE TO BE THE VOICE OF THESE VALUES"
Frieden emphasized that Europe's success is based on an international order consisting of rules, treaties, and institutions, but this order is "under more pressure than ever." He stated, "Europe cannot abandon the rules-based system and international law; we must continue to be the voice of these values."
"THE RIGHT TO ASYLUM MUST BE PROTECTED"
Frieden warned that the enlargement of the European Union (EU) now has "strategic importance" and that delaying the accession process risks distancing candidate countries from the EU.
Noting that a long-term return to controls at the internal borders of the EU would be "a step back for the entire European project," Frieden stated, "The right to asylum must be protected. This is an undeniable part of our shared humanity. In each of the countries in Europe, regular migration is necessary for economic development."
