Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed Turkey-U.S. relations and cooperation opportunities in the fields of trade, transportation, and energy in Washington. During the meeting, it was reported that Şimşek reminded his counterpart of the restrictions imposed on Turkey in the defense industry.
The Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mehmet Şimşek, met with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington. During the meeting, opportunities for cooperation in trade, transportation, and energy, as well as the development of cooperation in the defense industry, were discussed, in addition to Turkey-U.S. relations. A statement was made by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance regarding Minister Mehmet Şimşek's contacts in the U.S. within the framework of the G20, IMF, and World Bank Spring meetings.
CALL FOR THE LIFTING OF EXISTING RESTRICTIONS IN THE DEFENSE SECTOR
The statement indicating that Şimşek met with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington noted the following details about the meeting: In a constructive atmosphere, with the participation of Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan, the meeting emphasized the opportunities for advancing Turkey-U.S. relations in a multidimensional manner, in accordance with the common political will expressed by our President and President Trump. In this context, we addressed opportunities for cooperation in investment and trade, transportation, and energy, and highlighted the importance of lifting existing restrictions to enhance cooperation in the defense industry. Information was provided about the economic stability program being implemented in Turkey. The meeting also discussed steps that could be taken by Turkey and the U.S. to establish regional peace and stability. In this context, we pointed out the necessity of lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria, and explained the contributions Turkey could make to achieve a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine.
