A magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred yesterday at 18:11 in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir, followed by approximately 100 aftershocks, the largest of which were 4.1 and 4.4. While the seismic activity raises concerns, seismologist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated, "Aftershocks have been rampant in Sındırgı. The trend is normal. However, the continued activity is surprising."
The Sındırgı district of Balıkesir, which has been declared a disaster area and has experienced frequent earthquakes recently, has been shaking for the last 15 hours. A 4.5 magnitude earthquake occurred at 18:11, and since that time, nearly 100 aftershocks have been recorded.
THE FIRST EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED AT 18:11
According to information obtained from AFAD, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir at 18:11. The tremor occurred at a depth of 11.58 kilometers. Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced that there have been no reported negative incidents related to the earthquake to the Ministry units.
Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu stated, "As of now, there is no negative situation. I extend my best wishes to the citizens affected by the earthquake."
EARTHQUAKES OF 4.1 AND 4.4 WITH A 20-MINUTE INTERVAL
Following the 4.5 magnitude earthquake at 18:11, two separate earthquakes of 4.1 and 4.4 magnitudes occurred in Sındırgı at 23:11 and 23:28, respectively.
AFTERSHOCKS CONTINUE
According to the data from the AFAD Earthquake Department, earthquakes of magnitudes 3.9, 3.7, and 4.00 occurred at 02:12, 02:21, and 02:27, respectively. In the district that continued to shake until morning, according to AFAD data, 100 aftershocks were recorded.
"IT'S SURPRISING THAT IT HASN'T STOPPED"
Following the earthquakes in Sındırgı, Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan made a statement on his social media account, drawing attention to the intensity of the aftershocks.
Ercan stated, "The aftershocks in Sındırgı have gone wild. The trend is normal. However, it is still surprising that it hasn't stopped."
