NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made statements to the press during the 62nd Munich Security Conference. Evaluating the latest situation in the Ukraine war, Rutte drew attention to the difference between the perception being created about the performance of the Russian army on the field and the reality.

AN ANALOGY THAT WILL ANNOY PUTIN

Pointing to Russia's propaganda power, Rutte said, "Russia wants us to see it as a 'powerful bear.' However, it can be said that it is progressing at the speed of a 'garden snail' in Ukraine. Therefore, let us not be deceived by Russian propaganda." Emphasizing that this slow progress has a very heavy cost for Russia, Rutte noted that the Russian army lost approximately 35,000 soldiers in December and about 30,000 in January.

RUTTE PLEASED WITH THE INCREASE IN DEFENSE SPENDING

Rutte also referred to the NATO Defense Ministers Meeting held in Brussels yesterday, expressing his satisfaction with European allies increasing their defense spending. Rutte stated, "As Europe takes on more responsibility and assumes a leadership role, this leads to the U.S. becoming much more closely tied to NATO. Washington's commitment to the alliance continues."

Touching on the ongoing peace process, Rutte acknowledged the difficulty and time-consuming nature of the process, adding that the Washington administration is progressing in constant communication and coordination with NATO allies.
