In the Çemişgezek district of Tunceli, 28-year-old Onur Ulaş Demir, who fishes in the Keban Dam Lake, catches fish such as mirror carp, pike, and catfish using 2,000 meters of nets daily, earning approximately 200,000 Turkish lira per month.
Onur Ulaş Demir (28), who lives in the Çemişgezek district of Tunceli, continues his fishing career that he started at a young age in the Keban Dam Lake. Demir, who casts his 2,000-meter nets into the lake from early morning until late at night, earns approximately 200,000 lira a month from the fish he catches.
COMMON CARP, PIKE, SHABUT…
Demir continues the business he started with his father alone after his father's passing. The young fisherman, who spends most of his day on the boat, catches common carp, pike, trout, shabut, blackfish, and carp species. Selling the fish he catches at 90 lira per kilo to cooperatives in Elazığ and Tunceli, Demir sends fish from there to Iraq via Diyarbakır and to many restaurants across Turkey.
"I FEEL FREE WHEN I AM ON THE WATER"
Stating that fishing is a passion for him, Demir said, "I feel free when I am on the water. I love the boat and the fish. I started with my father, and now I continue alone. We catch an average of 150 kilos of fish daily, and our earnings are sufficient for us."
INCOME INCREASES IN SUMMER
Demir noted that the fish, which was sold for 95 lira last year, is now finding buyers at 90 lira, but he hopes that prices will rise again. He mentioned that his earnings increase during the summer months, while income decreases in winter.
