The Israeli Parliament's National Security Committee discussed a bill that envisions the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners. It was announced that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu supports the bill, which is expected to come to the Parliament this week. For the bill to become law, it needs to be approved in three separate votes in the Parliament.
According to a report in the Israeli local press, the National Security Committee discussed a bill that foresees the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners.
STATED THAT HE IS AGAINST THE BILL
Gal Hirsch, the Coordinator for Prisoners and Missing Persons, who spoke at the committee, stated that he was against the bill due to concerns that it could harm right-wing Israeli prisoners in Gaza. Hirsch noted that he now supports the bill due to the release of all right-wing Israeli prisoners.
"NETANYAHU SUPPORTS THE BILL CONTAINING THE DEATH PENALTY"
An Israeli official noted that Netanyahu also supports the bill that includes the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners. On the other hand, the Committee opened the way for the bill containing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners to be voted on in the Parliament.
BEN-GVIR THANKED NETANYAHU
Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir thanked Netanyahu for his support in the acceptance of the bill presented by his party in the Committee. Ben-Gvir argued that there should be no discretion for the courts and that the death penalty should be imposed on every Palestinian who kills an Israeli citizen.
NEEDS TO BE ACCEPTED IN 3 SEPARATE VOTES
The bill, which is expected to come to the Parliament this week, needs to be accepted in 3 separate votes in the Parliament to become law.
ISRAELIS WHO KILL PALESTINIANS WILL BE EXEMPT
The controversial bill foresees that an Israeli court could impose the death penalty on those who kill an Israeli for "nationalist reasons." However, if the bill becomes law, this provision will not apply to an Israeli who kills a Palestinian.
