New application in Istanbul traffic! This announcement will be heard on the radios of all vehicles.

With the new system developed by the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate, an announcement saying "Please give way to the ambulance" will be transmitted via frequency to the radios of vehicles near the ambulance. The system aims to instill the correct habit of yielding to ambulances in drivers using the "zipper method," which will reduce the waiting time for ambulances and allow them to reach patients more quickly.

With the new system developed by the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate, a frequency-based announcement of "Please give way to the ambulance" will be transmitted to the radios of vehicles near the ambulance, ensuring that drivers are alerted.

A special device was developed using advanced radio frequency module engineering techniques by doctors working in the Emergency Health Services Directorate to directly inform drivers in situations where the ambulance siren cannot be heard due to heavy traffic or noise.

HEARD ON ALL VEHICLE RADIOS WITHIN 50 METERS

The device installed in ambulances will operate over the FM band, broadcasting warnings on frequencies of vehicles within 50 meters, reaching in-car radios simultaneously and transmitting announcements such as "Please give way to the ambulance," "Please give way to the approaching ambulance," and "Please apply the zipper system to give way to life."

Thanks to the system, drivers will be able to give way to ambulances without panicking and by directing themselves correctly.

THE GOAL IS TO ENCOURAGE GIVING WAY TO AMBULANCES

The project aims to encourage giving way to ambulances, to instill the habit of giving way correctly using the "zipper method" among drivers, to prevent secondary accidents caused by panic from the siren sound, and to increase the chances of survival for patients.

AMBULANCES' WAITING TIMES WILL BE REDUCED

With the new system, the waiting time for ambulances at traffic lights and busy intersections will be reduced, allowing for quicker access to patients, saving more lives, and instilling the awareness in society that "Giving way to ambulances is not a choice, but a matter of life."

The study also aims to create a model that can be integrated with traffic safety projects at the European Union (EU) level.

"WE CAN REACH OUR CITIZENS IN 8 MINUTES WITHIN THE CITY"

Istanbul Provincial Health Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Emre Güner stated that they continue their efforts to solve all kinds of health problems of citizens in Istanbul.

Emphasizing the importance of quickly transporting citizens to health facilities in emergency health services, Güner expressed that ambulance services hold a significant place in this regard.

Güner highlighted that when citizens call the 112 Emergency Call Center, a race against time begins, stating, "The most important issue here is to quickly pick up the patient from their location and take them to the right doctor, the right treatment center. We are good at this. We can reach our citizens in 8 minutes within the city and about 12 to 13 minutes in rural areas."

Güner mentioned that one of the biggest problems in Istanbul is traffic, and therefore, the time for ambulances to reach incidents can be extended during peak traffic hours.

"SOMETIMES OUR DRIVERS CANNOT NOTICE THE AMBULANCE IS COMING"

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güner stated that they provide health services to citizens with 507 ambulances at 350 emergency health stations in Istanbul.

Emphasizing that the Ministry of Health has implemented the zipper system to solve the problems faced by ambulances in traffic, Güner said that the zipper system has been successfully implemented in Istanbul.

Güner noted that ambulances warn vehicles in traffic with sirens and flashing lights, stating, "No matter how much you warn with sirens and flashing lights in traffic, sometimes our drivers cannot notice that the ambulance is coming. We are starting a special application in Istanbul. By entering the radio frequency of vehicles, we will make announcements that alert drivers while they are listening to music or the radio. This is a systematic approach similar to the warnings made on highways, bridges, and tunnels."

FIRST IN BOTH TURKEY AND THE WORLD

Güner stated that the pilot application will be expanded throughout Istanbul, saying, "This application is the first in Turkey and also in the world. This is a sign for us. Because we are in Istanbul, the health capital of the world. It is necessary for us to be the first."

"WE WILL INFILTRATE VEHICLE RADIOS WITH RADIO BROADCASTS AND DELIVER MESSAGES"

Dr. Abdurrahman Kavuncu, Head of Istanbul Emergency Health Services, stated that Istanbul is one of the cities with the most severe traffic problems in the world.

Emphasizing that the traffic congestion causes ambulances to take longer to transport their patients to health facilities, Kavuncu said that they are trying to shorten this time.

Kavuncu explained that they have been brainstorming to solve the problem and have developed a new system, stating, "What we have produced is a radio broadcast based on the logic of making announcements to the radios that other drivers listen to daily. With this radio broadcast, we will infiltrate the radios of nearby vehicles and pull them from the channel they are listening to to another channel to deliver our message."

Emphasizing that the system they have developed is an engineering project, Kavuncu stated, "The product we have made is a radio frequency that can broadcast to a radius of approximately 30 to 200 meters. We can adjust this measurement ourselves. We can make it 50 meters or 100 meters. Thus, the surrounding drivers will be more sensitive and create awareness."

"THE PRODUCT IS A RESULT OF OUR OWN ENGINEERING"

Dr. Kavuncu emphasized that they want to raise awareness among drivers in traffic, stating:

"We want to explain the importance of giving way to approaching ambulances and to implement the zipper model. This will contribute to us. Most importantly, we will ensure that patients reach their destinations more quickly. A sensitive driver feels the effort to give way upon hearing the siren of the approaching ambulance and feels under stress. Along with this, they may cause secondary accidents or fail to give way to the ambulance. We will eliminate this panic. The product is a result of our own engineering."

This has been very successful. We aim to spread the product across all ambulances in the system. Thus, we believe that we will not only reach our patient more safely but also transport them more securely. Our siren and light warning devices will continue. In addition to this, we will also communicate our request to our drivers via radio frequency.
