Total number of infections nearing 57,500, recoveries now close to 48,700.

Nigeria's coronavirus death toll now stands at 1,100, while the total number of cases is nearing 57,500, authorities said on Tuesday.

Two more COVID-19 fatalities and 195 infections were registered in the West African country over the past day, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The overall case count in Nigeria's 36 states and Federal Capital Territory has increased to 57,437, including 48,674 recoveries, the NCDC said in its latest update.

With over 18,900 cases, the commercial capital Lagos remains Nigeria's worst-hit city.

It is followed by the Federal Capital Territory, which includes the capital Abuja, with more than 5,500 cases, and the southwestern Oyo State, where more than 3,200 cases have been confirmed to date.

Nigeria is among the five hardest-hit countries in Africa that account for well over half of the continent's 1.41 million total infections.

According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 1,412,310 cases have been registered across the continent so far, including 34,072 deaths and over 1.15 million (1,158,162) recoveries.

Worldwide, the virus has claimed nearly 965,000 lives in 188 countries and regions since last December.The US, India, Brazil, and Russia are currently the worst-hit countries.The global COVID-19 case count is now over 31.32 million, with more than 21.5 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University. -
