Yeni Malatyaspor, which once played in the Süper Lig and represented Turkey in European cups, confirmed its farewell to the Trendyol 1. Lig at the end of the season, losing its last 2 matches with a score of 7-0. Founded in 1986 under the name Malatya Belediyespor, the team has shown a fluctuating performance and was promoted to TFF 2. Lig in the 2009-2010 season.
In the extraordinary general assembly held in 2010, the name was changed to Yeni Malatyaspor, and the Malatya representative secured its place in TFF 1. Lig by becoming the champion of TFF 2. Lig White Group in the 2014-2015 season. The yellow-black team earned the right to compete in the Süper Lig by finishing 2nd in this league in the 2016-2017 season. After spending 5 seasons in the Süper Lig, the Eastern Anatolian representative bid farewell to the league in the 2021-2022 season.
Mathematically, the Malatya representative's relegation was confirmed with 16 weeks remaining in the Trendyol 1. Lig, where it is currently in its 3rd season.
SÜPER LİG REPORT CARD
Completing the TFF 1. Lig in 2nd place in the 2016-2017 season and rising to the Süper Lig, the Malatya representative managed to stay in Turkey's most prestigious league for 5 seasons. In its first year in the Süper Lig, the Malatya team finished the 2017-2018 season in 10th place with 43 points. The yellow-blacks showed their best performance in the 2018-2019 season, finishing 5th in the league with 47 points from 13 wins and 8 draws.
COMPETED IN EUROPE
After Galatasaray, the league champion, won the Ziraat Turkey Cup in the 2018-2019 season, Yeni Malatyaspor earned the right to participate in the UEFA Europa League. Representing Turkey in European cups, the Malatya representative faced Serbian team Partizan in the 3rd qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, losing the first match 3-1 and winning the second match 1-0, but ultimately could not avoid elimination.
AVOIDED RELEGATION DURING THE PANDEMIC
The 2019-2020 season was a tough one for Yeni Malatyaspor. The yellow-blacks collected 32 points in 34 matches, finishing the season in 16th place within the relegation zone.
With the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) lifting relegation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Yeni Malatyaspor found another chance to compete in the Süper Lig.
In the 2020-2021 season, despite not performing as desired, Yeni Malatyaspor managed to stay in the league by finishing 15th with 45 points.
EARTHQUAKE PROCESS
After finishing the 2021-2022 season in last place with twenty points, the Malatya representative bid farewell to the Süper Lig and completed the first half of the 2022-2023 season in 16th place in the Trendyol 1. Lig.
Affected by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, which were described as the "disaster of the century," the Malatya representative decided to withdraw from the league.
The Eastern Anatolian team, which lost its goalkeeper Ahmet Eyüp Türkaslan in the earthquakes, parted ways with most of its players. Due to financial and earthquake-related issues, Yeni Malatyaspor did not participate in the 2023-2024 season, with their rights reserved.
FAILED TO APPEAR IN THE FIRST WEEK MATCH
The Malatya representative did not take the field against Pendikspor in the first week of the Trendyol 1. Lig. Yeni Malatyaspor, whose match against Esenler Erokspor in the 2nd week was postponed, played the home match against Ankara Keçiörengücü in the 3rd week in Şanlıurfa due to the Yeni Malatya Stadium serving earthquake victims and the dismantling of the camera and turnstile system after February 6, 2023.
As the problems in the stadium continued, the Malatya team began to play its home matches as away games.
Yeni Malatyaspor played the match against Ahlatcı Çorum FK in Ankara in the 5th week, the match against Amed Sportif Faaliyetler in Şanlıurfa in the 7th week, the match against MKE Ankaragücü in Ankara in the 9th week, and the match against Sakaryaspor in Gaziantep in the 11th week, finally meeting its fans at home for the first time in the 13th week against Uğur Okulları İstanbulspor.
