Poland intervened in coordination with NATO following the violation of its airspace by Russian drones. For the first time since the start of the war, Polish air defense units directly engaged targets; four airports were temporarily closed.
The Polish Armed Forces announced that "drone-type objects" entered the country's airspace during Russia's attacks on Ukraine. The Operational Command announced that a military operation has been initiated to detect and neutralize these objects.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Polish aircraft are "using weapons against hostile targets" and said they are in constant contact with NATO command.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that four airports, including Chopin Airport in the capital Warsaw, have been temporarily closed. Among these is Rzeszow–Jasionka Airport, which plays a significant role in the transfer of passengers and weapons to Ukraine.
"PUTIN IS TESTING NATO"
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin in the U.S. stated that Russia's repeated UAV violations of NATO airspace mean that "Vladimir Putin is testing the alliance's resolve." Republican House member Joe Wilson noted that Russia is "attacking NATO ally Poland," describing it as a "declaration of war."
Wilson called on U.S. President Donald Trump to impose "sanctions that will drive Russia's war machine to bankruptcy."
HIGH ALERT STATUS HAS BEEN DECLARED
Poland has maintained a high alert level regarding airspace violations following the death of two people when a missile from Ukraine fell in a border village in 2022. However, for the first time, Polish and allied defense systems have been directly activated to destroy UAVs.
Meanwhile, Poland announced that it has decided to close the Belarus border starting from midnight tomorrow. Security measures have been increased in both Poland and the Baltic countries due to the large-scale "Zapad" exercises jointly initiated by Russia and Belarus.
