Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Haluk Eyidoğan stated that they expect a possible earthquake in the Sea of Marmara to affect the coastal strip and 11 provinces in the region. Eyidoğan said, "The probability of an earthquake of magnitude 7 or higher occurring in the region is high." "11 PROVINCES IN MARMARA WILL BE AFFECTED BY THE EARTHQUAKE"Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Haluk Eyidoğan, who came to Edirne for a disaster workshop hosted by Trakya University, stated in a press conference that the Marmara geography has a 2,000-year history of earthquakes. Indicating that an earthquake is expected in the region, Eyidoğan said, "11 provinces in the Marmara geography will be affected by a major earthquake. The recent earthquake on February 6 was a regional earthquake, with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5. The expectation of an earthquake of 7 or greater in Marmara has been discussed for years. Scientists are conducting studies on this issue. We have such an expectation, but the exact date and location are not clearly known, but there is a high risk." Eyidoğan pointed out that a possible earthquake in Marmara would also affect other provinces with coastlines as much as Istanbul. "THE PROBABILITY OF AN EARTHQUAKE OF 7 OR HIGHER IN THE REGION IS HIGH"Reminding that a large population lives in the region, Eyidoğan noted: "If an earthquake occurs on the North Anatolian Fault within the Sea of Marmara, not only Istanbul but also 11 provinces in Marmara will be affected. Just as much as Istanbul will be affected, Tekirdağ, Kocaeli, Yalova, Bursa, Balıkesir, and Çanakkale will also be affected. Cities with coastlines on the Sea of Marmara will be affected. The Marmara Region hosts nearly 30 million people, the majority of whom live in Istanbul. Therefore, a regional earthquake in a geography where 30 million people live can lead to very serious problems. Because the share of the Marmara Region in the gross national product is around 50 percent. This also poses a significant problem for the national economy and can become a matter of survival. The probability of an earthquake of magnitude 7 or higher occurring in the region is high.
