On the anniversary of the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, which are referred to as the disaster of the century, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, speaking at a panel, stated, "The earthquake on February 6 was an earthquake on the East Anatolian fault. The earthquake that will actually hit Diyarbakır is the one along the Bitlis-Zagros fault line. When that fault becomes active, the real major disaster will occur then."
The panel titled 'Earthquake-Resilient Cities on the Anniversary of the February 6 Earthquake' was organized by the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality at the Sezai Karakoç Cultural and Congress Center in the Yenişehir district. The panel was attended by Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, a member of the Science Academy, Doğan Hatun, a member and co-chair of the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Council, representatives of various civil society organizations, and citizens.
"THE REAL GREAT DISASTER WILL HAPPEN THEN"
After the opening speeches and the slideshow presentation, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that it is possible to make Diyarbakır earthquake-resistant, saying, "Earthquakes are not our destiny. We never foresee this with our religious beliefs. Elazığ was hit by an earthquake. After the earthquake, on the second day, I shouted, 'Be careful about Kahramanmaraş.' Neither the official bodies of Kahramanmaraş nor Malatya, nor the civilians heard me. No one knows when an earthquake will occur, do not trust them. But earthquakes can be predicted. With today's science and technology, it is possible to make Diyarbakır earthquake-resistant. The impact of an earthquake on Diyarbakır can be little or a lot. Both the East Anatolian fault and the Bitlis-Zagros fault line produce earthquakes. The February 6 earthquake was one that occurred on the East Anatolian fault. The earthquake that will actually hit Diyarbakır will be the one on the Bitlis-Zagros fault line. When that moves, the real great disaster will happen then," he said.
"IF AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURS IN ONE PLACE, AFTER A CERTAIN TIME, ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE OF THE SAME MAGNITUDE WILL OCCUR IN THE SAME PLACE"
Görür pointed out that after a certain period, an earthquake will occur again in places where earthquakes have happened, stating, "The earthquakes that occurred on February 6 produced energy equivalent to the simultaneous explosion of 5 million tons of dynamite. Think about the energy released if you detonate 5 million tons of TNT or dynamite. Hundreds of atomic bombs. I mean, we say 'The big atomic bomb destroyed Japan, killed people,' but they dropped one small bomb. This is equivalent to hundreds of atomic bombs. There is a principle in earth sciences. Whether you believe it or not. If you have any trust in me, my advice is to believe it. That is, if an earthquake occurs in one place, after a certain time, another earthquake of the same magnitude will occur in the same place. This is a principle, a rule. It is like mathematics, just like 2 plus 2 equals 4. It does not deviate," he said.
