The deadline for the second installment payment of property tax is approaching. Experts state that citizens with outstanding debts should not leave their transactions until the last day, as the payment schedule will expire on December 1. A late payment interest of 3.5% is applied to those who do not pay their tax debts on time.

Citizens can easily check their property tax debts through e-Government, and they can also obtain face-to-face information through the Financial Services Unit of the municipalities to which the property is affiliated.

NEW REGULATION EXPECTED FOR 2026

A new regulation is expected to be discussed in the Parliament to prevent excessive increases in property tax that may occur in 2026.

WHO IS EXEMPT FROM PROPERTY TAX?

Some citizens who meet certain conditions are exempt from paying property tax. Retirees who own a single residence not exceeding 200 square meters, as well as retired widows and orphans receiving pensions, do not pay property tax. Disabled individuals, veterans, and those who can document that they have no income are also exempt from this tax.

The groups exempt from property tax are as follows:

  • Housewives and unemployed individuals with no income
  • Retirees whose only income is from pensions received from SGK
  • Disabled citizens
  • Veterans
  • Families of martyrs

"NON-WORKING" CONDITION FOR RETIREES

To benefit from the exemption, retirees must not be actively working. Retirees who are employed in a paid job or engaged in commercial activities cannot take advantage of this right. However, the exemption can be applied from the moment they terminate their work life.

Another criterion for those with no income and retirees is that the total of capital income such as deposit interest and dividends obtained in the previous year must not exceed 230,000 lira.

EXEMPTION FOR NEW RETIREES IN 2026

Individuals who submitted their retirement application this year are required to pay the property tax for the year 2025. Their exemption rights will be valid starting from 2026.
