The European Parliament has adopted a decision that distorts the Turkish military's intervention during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, targeting the Turkish Cypriot people and Turkey. This decision has sparked a series of reactions from Turkey. While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the decision is null and void, AK Party Spokesperson Çelik said, "The so-called decision adopted in the European Parliament is a vile slander against the heroic Turkish Armed Forces."
The European Parliament has taken a new unilateral and controversial step regarding the Cyprus issue. In the recently adopted resolution, Turkey's presence on the island and the 1974 Peace Operation were taken out of the context of international law and made a target.
The content of the adopted text appears to be based entirely on the arguments and claims of the Greek Cypriot Administration. The controversial text was prepared by rapporteur Eleonora Meleti, of Greek origin. The resolution includes baseless allegations that Turkish Armed Forces committed crimes against women during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. Throughout the text, Turkey is directly defined as an "occupying" power.
HISTORICAL AND LEGAL CONTEXT IGNORED
In this resolution adopted by the European Parliament, the reasons behind the Cyprus Peace Operation and its international legal dimension were completely disregarded. While Turkey's intervention arising from its guarantor rights was taken out of context, the text was built solely on the claims of the Greek Cypriot side, turning it into a tool for unjust accusations against Turkey.
REACTIONS POUR FROM TURKEY
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: RESOLUTION NULL AND VOID
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the resolution adopted in the European Parliament, containing "baseless and irrational allegations against the Turkish Armed Forces," is null and void.
A written statement regarding the resolution on Cyprus adopted in the European Parliament was made by the Ministry.
The statement said, "The resolution adopted in the European Parliament, containing baseless and irrational allegations against the heroic Turkish Armed Forces, is null and void."
It was noted that full support was given to the statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on the resolution, stating, "This resolution, which contains vile slanders, constitutes the latest example of the biased and distorted approach adopted by the European Union (EU) and specifically the European Parliament, under the influence of certain circles regarding the Cyprus issue."
The statement expressed concern that EU institutions are increasingly adopting an approach towards the Cyprus issue that diverges from historical realities and impartiality.
