An armed ambush was set up against the convoy of Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Ampatuan in the Philippines; while the president escaped unscathed from the rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack, 3 suspects were killed in the ensuing clash.
Three attackers were killed in an assault on the convoy of Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Mitra Ampatuan in the province of Maguindanao del Sur in the southern Philippines. The convoy, which included the mayor, was targeted when armed individuals ambushed it at the corner of Maguindanao Street in Brgy. Mother Poblacion on Sunday morning.
THEY TARGETED WITH A ROCKET LAUNCHER
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the attackers exited a small minibus and opened fire on the mayor's SUV with a rocket launcher (RPG). The fired rocket hit the vehicle, causing heavy smoke to emerge, but the vehicle managed to continue moving.
SECURITY PERSONNEL INJURED
While Mayor Ampatuan escaped the attack unharmed, some security personnel in the convoy were injured. When police and municipal guards returned fire at the scene, the attackers managed to escape.
3 SUSPECTS KILLED IN OPERATION
Immediately following the attack, police and military launched a large-scale operation to capture the suspects. As a result of the pursuit, three suspects were killed, and other individuals connected to the incident were reported to be pursued.
ALARM LEVEL RAISED
Local authorities have not yet determined the motive behind the attack, but it has been recorded as the third assassination attempt on Ampatuan. All security units raised the alarm level in the area.
