Beşiktaş Club President Serdal Adalı made statements regarding the transfer period, the new season, and the club's agenda at a press conference held at the Tüpraş Stadium Fashion Center.
'THE SQUAD HAD TO BE BUILT ALMOST FROM SCRATCH' President Adalı noted that they closed the debts of the previous season and many ongoing files, stating, "This squad had to be built almost from scratch. This team had to change. We had to bring in quality, ambitious players who feel a sense of belonging to the positions they play, and most importantly, players whose personal goals are not yet fulfilled, to replace those players we thought could not take us to our targets. In this direction, we parted ways with exactly 25 players at the beginning of this season. We have agreed with exactly 12 new players who we believe meet the criteria we mentioned." he said.
'WE HAD LONG NEGOTIATIONS' Adalı emphasized that they had difficulties sending players away, which caused delays in new transfers, saying, "Some of them didn't care about not getting playing time. They had a very comfortable life in Istanbul with Beşiktaş's money. In other words, if we left them alone, they would have been even more satisfied. So, as you can understand, the player is happy, the agent who brought him is happy, but they are nowhere to be found. The managers who brought them here are either on their yachts or at their summer houses. Everyone involved except for Beşiktaş fans is enjoying themselves. Some of the other players, despite doing everything they could, could not achieve the performance they desired for various reasons. We scoured the entire market. We had long negotiations and discussions with the players. Excluding 5 players who were raised from the youth team and went on loan, we parted ways with a total of 20 players who could not perform for various reasons." he stated.
'THEIR DEMANDS WERE TOO HIGH FOR US' Providing information about the players who left the team, President Serdal Adalı expressed the following:
"There was a lot of talk about Masuaku. After he was declared an unwanted player during the season, he received a lot of praise and compliments after leaving. Masuaku's contract had expired, he was 31 years old, and he was a player who could sometimes show fluctuating performances. Therefore, we offered him a 1-year guaranteed contract and a salary that would comply with our conditions. However, the player asked us for a minimum 2-year contract and a significantly high salary. Although he was a player whose form had improved during our period, his demands were very, very high for us. Therefore, we decided to part ways. Instead, we brought in Jurasek, a 25-year-old player who plays for the Czech national team and was transferred by Benfica for 14 million euros just 2 years ago, for much less than the salary Masuaku demanded. We did not pay any rental fee to his club. There is no mandatory purchase option either. We have an option right that is completely dependent on our preference. However, one transfer was not enough for this position, and we also acquired a second one. We added Rıdvan to our squad as well. We were in the final stages with 2 different players for the right-back rotation, but the transfers were canceled. However, our fans should know that we fully protected our club's rights in both of these transfers, and we stand firmly behind the decisions we made. We saw an important light in the Taylan transfer that we have been following since the winter break. Frankly, we expected this player to sign with an important club in the Bundesliga. A bid of 5 million euros was made for his transfer. There was some uncertainty, and we increased our offer for the player from 4 million euros to 6 million euros and completed this transfer on the same day. Taylan is still an active player in the Germany U21 team, and our national team officials have been working hard to bring him to our country for a long time. Instead of giving millions of euros in salary to a 35-year-old player, we invested in a 19-year-old player who can benefit both our Beşiktaş and hopefully our national team for many years. After the arrival of our coach Sergen, at his request, we added Gökhan Sazdağı, one of the experienced and stable players in our league, to our squad. Gökhan contributed as if he had been a part of this team for years in his very first match. We have almost completely changed both full-back positions."
'THE OPTION WILL BE ACTIVATED IF HE SCORES 15 GOALS' Highlighting that Tammy Abraham's contract includes a release clause of 30 million euros, the president of the black-and-white club stated, "35-year-old Immobile left, and 27-year-old Abraham and 23-year-old El Bilal Toure came in his place. We want to achieve great success with Abraham and see him in our team for many years. But he is a player who can still bring a transfer fee to Beşiktaş when his duty here is over with his successful football. There is a release clause of 30 million euros in his contract. We signed a 1-year loan agreement with El Bilal Toure. The purchase option will be activated if he scores 15 goals. Additionally, we can use this option if we want. The option fee is 15 million euros, and if this happens, there is also a release clause of 40 million euros for the future." he stated.
'THE SALARY OFFER HE RECEIVED FROM RUSSIA HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON HIS DECISION' Serdal Adalı also spoke about the process of Gedson Fernandes's departure from the team, saying, "The only player among those who left that our fans would genuinely be sad about was Gedson. The player's firm expression of his desire to leave determined the main role in this transfer. We had long discussions with him, but Gedson's salary offer from Russia was very influential in his decision. In fact, the first offer for the player came during the winter transfer season. The offer we received at that time was 30% lower than the amount agreed upon this summer. To maximize the profit from this sale, we first needed to resolve the situation with Benfica. Therefore, we went and bought the remaining half of his contract for 10 million euros. Following this, we sold him to Spartak Moscow for 26 million euros and an additional 2 million euros in conditional bonuses. We will also receive 10% of the profit from any future sale. I would like to remind you that this is the highest player sale in Beşiktaş history. Instead of Gedson, we made a transfer that perhaps made our community and fans the happiest." he said.
'ORKUN KÖKÇÜ RAISED EXPECTATIONS' Serdal Adalı added that the transfer of Orkun Kökçü raised expectations both in the community and among the fans, saying, "We brought Orkun Kökçü, one of the most important players in his position in Europe, to our Beşiktaş at just 24 years old." ```Orkun's transfer raised the expectations of our fans. Over 30,000 Beşiktaş fans attended the signing ceremony in the middle of summer. After this transfer, a different atmosphere emerged among the fans within the community. Expectations suddenly grew. Frankly, as expectations grew, the standards of appreciation changed instantly as well. Beşiktaş fans began to break away from the ordinariness they had been accustomed to for years. They truly deserve the best. However, those who are ready to attack our community and stir up trouble have once again started to exploit this situation in an ugly way. On that day, while 30,000 people were waiting for Orkun in the stadium happily and hopefully, campaigns were launched on social media by those who wanted to portray the player as inadequate by highlighting his cost, saying "we don't want him." On the day we signed Abraham, all platforms were flooded with clips of the goals he missed. There are many other examples; there's no need to list them. They have no tolerance for even a single day of happiness for Beşiktaş fans. Let go of Beşiktaş fans' necks. Let people rejoice, buy their players' jerseys, and be happy. Orkun has given us great strength. He will become one of the symbolic names of Beşiktaş. Hopefully, he will experience championships here and lift trophies," he evaluated.
'WE WANTED IT BUT IT DIDN'T HAPPEN' President Adalı also reminded that they strengthened the midfield with Wilfred Ndidi, saying, "He has been a consistent starting player in the Premier League for years. Together with these 2 experienced and top-level players, we also trusted our children from Beşiktaş's youth academy, Demir Ege and Kartal Kayra. We signed new contracts with both of them that will be valid for 3 more years, including this season. We wanted one more player for squad depth in the midfield, but it didn't happen for various reasons. We will reassess during the winter transfer period," he said.
'TOTAL COSTS ARE 85 MILLION EUROS' Stating that the total cost of Amir Hadziahmetovic, Al-Musrati, Onana, Kerem Atakan Kesgin, Bahtiyar, Chamberlain, Muci, and Joao Mario so far is 85 million euros, Adalı said, "Excluding salary costs, this figure is approximately 40 million euros. We can understand much more clearly how many wrong things were done in previous seasons and how Beşiktaş is still struggling with the burdens of the past by looking at this total cost," he stated.
'WE SAVED 1.5 MILLION EUROS OF HIS SALARY' Sharing the transfer details of the departing players, Serdal Adalı said, "We loaned Amir to Hull City for 700,000 euros, but we will continue to pay the player's salary. We agreed with Hellas Verona for Musrati for a loan fee of 2 million euros and a purchase option of 7 million euros. However, while receiving this loan fee, we will also pay the player's salary of 2.6 million euros. For Onana, who was transferred for approximately 5 million euros, we received a loan fee of 500,000 euros from Genoa, and there is also a purchase option of 1 million euros. We also have to pay the player's salary of 1.5 million euros. When we loaned Mario to AEK, we will continue to pay 1.7 million of his 2.7 million euro salary. Muci went to Trabzonspor for a loan fee of 1 million euros and a purchase option of 8.5 million euros, and Trabzonspor will pay his salary. Bahtiyar, who was bought for 5.5 million euros two years ago, also went to Dinamo Moscow for 2.5 million euros. Kerem Atakan Kesgin transferred to Sivasspor. We also saved 1.5 million euros of Chamberlain's salary, and we terminated our contract. We tried to make the best savings possible. I think he will spend at least this season until January without a club.
'WE MADE A PROFIT OF OVER 2 MILLION EUROS' Stating that they made self-criticism regarding Elan Ricardo and Kenny Arroyo, Beşiktaş Club President Adalı addressed the departure process of these players, saying:
"In the winter transfer, we brought these 2 players into our squad as scout transfers. At that time, due to UEFA's financial criteria, we had a certain spending right left. Our then-coach wanted to use this for players who would be investments for the following years instead of giving it as salaries to 2 separate players due to the situation the team was in. I still stand by my thoughts that these players have significant potential. Unfortunately, these players could not find the time they wanted and we expected. As they couldn't find the time, they became more and more demoralized every passing day. As a result, they fell far behind expectations in terms of performance. This is a fact. We also need to learn lessons from this. Given this situation, I find the criticisms made very natural. I also find those within the limits of decency justified. However, nothing has been left unsaid regarding the transfers of these players and their costs. There were also those who exceeded their limits to make heavy accusations against us. For Arroyo, we have spent approximately 1 million 200 thousand euros in transfer fees, 140 thousand euros in agent fees, and 400 thousand euros in signing bonuses, totaling about 1 million 750 thousand euros. We did not pay any additional money to send him away. We parted ways for a total of 8 million euros for the share of the transfer that we had. Additionally, there are clauses for a 500 thousand euro bonus and a 10% share from the next sale. Our goal was different, but we parted ways with a profit of over 2 million euros even in a transfer that did not work out. Ricardo also went on loan. We will look at his situation during the season. We will evaluate it when the time comes."
'WE HAD 5 DIFFERENT WINGS IN OUR PLANS' President Adalı also provided information about wing transfers, stating, "Since May, we had 5 different wing players in our plans, but both Solskjaer and our coach Sergen wanted us to prioritize the defense or midfield deficiencies while there were some players in this position, even if it was out of necessity. Moreover, in the last 2 days, we had some disagreements with our coach Sergen on certain issues, but we talked, discussed, and eventually found middle ground. First, we added an important player like Cerny to our squad. Cerny was a player that our fans insisted on from the very first day. After Cerny, another addition to our wing rotation was Cengiz Ünder. We needed to make not just one but sometimes two transfers for the right-back, left-back, and forward positions.
As you can see, this number had to be 3 for the wings along with Jota Silva. You acquire one player, it's not enough; you acquire a second, and it's still lacking, so you are forced to bring in a third to the same rotation. The team can only be complete this way. As a result of this situation, we had to make three additions to our wing rotation. Jota Silva was one of the 5 wing players we had been negotiating with since the beginning of the summer. We had expressed our interest in him and wanted to learn his conditions. However, the player eventually agreed with Sporting. He conveyed to us that he wanted to play in his home country. When the transfer was canceled at the last minute due to paperwork not being completed, we stepped in again. Fortunately, we managed to include him in our squad before the transfer window closed," he stated.
'SANCHO DID NOT WANT TO CONTINUE IN OUR COUNTRY' Serdal Adalı stated that they had discussions with Jadon Sancho, but the player did not want to continue his career in Turkey. Adalı said, "Some things cannot be resolved just by offering money. You cannot overcome issues like players' career planning and the country they want to play in. For example, as I mentioned in a few of my previous conversations regarding Sancho, we accepted the amount the player wanted. We even reached an agreement with his club, but Sancho did not want to continue his career in our country. In this case, the transfer did not yield a positive result."
'IT'S NOT OVER YET, AND WE HAVE JUST STARTED' Emphasizing that they have created a skeleton squad at Beşiktaş, Adalı stated, "In this transfer season, Beşiktaş has parted ways with a total of 25 players. They have made 12 new transfers to replace these players. The average age of our new players is 25.5. This shows that a skeleton is being formed that will serve us for many years. Can a team have a transfer agenda involving 37 football players in just a 75-day summer transfer period? It's not over yet, and we can even say we have just started. We believe that we can improve our team with 4-5 transfers in the coming years on top of this foundation laid. We completed the first phase of our restructuring in this transfer season. The reason we said to our community, 'give us 3 transfer periods' when we took office is exactly this."
'SERKAN REÇBER HAS BECOME THE GENERAL COORDINATOR OF THE FOOTBALL A TEAM' President Serdal Adalı announced that they have reached an agreement with Serkan Reçber as the General Coordinator of the Football A Team.
Adalı also expressed his request for support from Beşiktaş fans for the black-and-white team, saying, "We have only played 3 matches in the league and have 2 victories. This season is just beginning for us. There will certainly be ups and downs. I want everyone to believe in this team and show their support more than ever. To achieve success, we need to spread the positive atmosphere to every area we touch together. Let them add their strength to ours. Let them not withhold their support from our games. They can criticize us, but they should support our players, who have sworn not to give up fighting on the field, until the last moment. A brilliant team has formed that understands what it means to be here. I invite everyone to remain calm and focus solely on the field until January," he stated.
'ESCAPING INJURY IS A GREAT LUCK' Serdal Adalı also made statements regarding Orkun Kökçü's red card in the match against Başakşehir last week, saying:
"It was really a great luck that Orkun was able to escape injury from the intentional foul made against him. God protected our player. As a result of the reflex he showed, it was our player who received the red card. Now we will be closely monitoring the continuation of this situation. We will ask one by one which factors will be taken into account in the penalty to be given. We do not expect it, but we have already prepared our defense for a possible wrong decision. Additionally, I find it hard to understand how the VAR referee got involved in this situation, especially in this position. The VAR referee, who should have been involved in different situations during the match, suddenly appeared in a situation that had already been closed and where the necessary cards were shown by the main referee. We couldn't understand how that happened. I carefully looked at the VAR recordings released yesterday. There wasn't even a tangible satisfactory dialogue between the main referee and them."
'I'M AFTER WHOEVER VIOLATED 1 KURUŞ' Clarifying the funding issue regarding the transfers of Muçi and Al Musrati, the black-and-white club stated, "The audit investigation is ongoing. We are also conducting it. This issue is already with the prosecutor's office. I am sure they will do what is necessary. I will be after whoever violated Beşiktaş's 1 kuruş. There were managers who turned their backs after paying money out of their pockets. At least due to their rights, because of the rights that millions of Beşiktaş fans have saved from their teeth and nails, I will follow this issue to the end. It is not normal for both transfers we have been discussing for 1.5 years to have their receivables transferred to the fund just a week apart," he said.
'WE WERE 1 WEEK LATE IN SENDING HIM OFF' Serdal Adalı stated that they were 1 week late in sending Ole Gunnar Solskjaer off, indicating that they parted ways with the Norwegian coach in exchange for the salaries he would receive until the end of the season. Adalı said, "The period I can say we were late regarding the coach is 1 week. I had made this decision after the first Lousanne match. It didn't feel right to me to send the coach off after the preparation matches and go down in history. He came at a very difficult time. He came when the community and the players were psychologically shattered and brought energy. He never lost any derby."
'THERE IS A DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERE AT THE FACILITIES' Adalı noted that the atmosphere at Nevzat Demir Facilities has changed since Sergen Yalçın took office, stating, "We have not felt the atmosphere from the day Solskjaer started again. There is a very different atmosphere at the facilities with Coach Sergen. Everyone is very happy. The players' confidence in themselves has increased. I am happy with the appearance."
Serdal Adalı also added that the black-and-white club does not have any issues with UEFA during the current period, stating, "We received a fine of 900,000 euros due to the excessive transfers of the previous year's management.
Currently, Beşiktaş has no issues with UEFA. The penalties from last year's expenditures have come. There may be more to come, but at this moment, we do not have any problems regarding the current period. An impression has been attempted to be created that we have done something wrong. This is not true," he stated.
"THIS TEAM WILL BE VERY SUCCESSFUL" President Adalı expressed his belief that under Coach Sergen, this team will be very successful, saying, "We have some deficiencies that will be addressed. For a team to be a team, they need to play together. This requires a certain amount of time. The one who will shorten this time is Sergen Yalçın," he said.
