Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly reacted to an article published in the New York Times that alleged sexual violence against Palestinian detainees. The Ministry claimed the newspaper published “one of the gravest slanders in modern press history.”
“SYSTEMATIC SEXUAL VIOLENCE” ALLEGATION
The article, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof, alleged that Israeli soldiers, interrogators, and prison staff subjected Palestinian detainees to “widespread sexual violence.”
Kristof, based on interviews with victims in the West Bank, United Nations data, and reports from human rights organizations, claimed that sexual violence had become an “organized state policy.”
UN EXPERTS ALSO WARNED
United Nations experts, in a statement released last month, expressed concerns that sexual violence had become “one of the central elements” of the Israeli occupation. The experts argued that the violations were “systematic and structural.”
ISRAEL DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically denied the allegations, asserting that the article published by the New York Times was inconsistent with reality and constituted a severe smear campaign against Israel.
