Prof. Dr. Canan Karatay appeared before the judge in the first hearing of the lawsuit filed against her regarding the alleged medical malpractice related to the death of her patient.
In the preliminary hearing held at the Istanbul Anatolian 4th Consumer Court, the defendant Canan Karatay and the lawyers of the parties were present.
"THE PATIENT THANKED ME"
In response to the allegations, Karatay, who stated that she saw the patient in 2016 and followed up for 3-4 years, said:
"During the examination and afterwards, the patient was doing very well. The patient later came to thank me. I did not see the patient at all for 4 years after 2020. I am being accused because of a patient I have not seen for 4 years. The patient had high blood pressure because he was diabetic. His blood pressure was also high because his body was low in salt. He was using alcohol and cigarettes. A diabetic diet plan was given to the patient, and the Karatay diet was recommended. The patient was not informed that he was diabetic until 2016, but his records from 2005 showed high uric acid levels. As a result of my recommendations and treatments, uric acid levels began to decrease. He had palpitations in his heart, and thanks to my recommendations and treatments, his values improved. Many risk factors have also improved due to my treatments and recommendations. From what I saw in the news on television, I learned that the cause of death was due to bleeding."
The lawyer of the defendant hospital stated that the patient was not an organizational patient and requested the dismissal of the case.
The plaintiff's lawyer claimed that the methods mentioned by Karatay were far from scientific methods and stated that his client was not an alcoholic.
The hearing was postponed to address the deficiencies.
RECOMMENDED TO STOP ALL MEDICATIONS
Furthermore, in the lawsuit petition, it was stated that the plaintiff İbrahim Ethem C.Ü. was examined by Prof. Dr. Canan Karatay in 2016 upon the recommendation of doctors for a bypass due to blocked arteries leading to the heart. The petition stated that as a result of the examination, Karatay told İbrahim Ethem C.Ü. that he was diabetic, that the problem was in his lifestyle, and that he needed to stop all medications he was using, while recommending a mild dose of medication for high blood pressure and plenty of salt.
SEVERE DISABILITY OCCURRED
The petition noted that in addition to İbrahim Ethem C.Ü., some vitamin injections and pills, as well as iodine supplements, were given by Karatay, and it was claimed that the patient's cardiovascular problem did not require surgical intervention.
Later, it was stated in the petition that Ülker was diagnosed with kidney failure and underwent a kidney transplant, and it was claimed that severe disability occurred due to the incorrect treatment applied by Karatay for 4 years, resulting in the loss of the patient's ability to work.
20 MILLION LIRA MORAL COMPENSATION DEMAND
In the petition, it was requested that both Canan Karatay and the private hospital where the treatment was applied pay 20 million lira each as moral compensation, while the material compensation was requested to be determined after an expert examination.
It was learned that the lawyer of the patient İbrahim Ethem C.Ü. also filed a criminal complaint against the hospital and Karatay with the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, in addition to the compensation lawsuit. It was later learned that the patient passed away on November 8, 2024.
