AK Party Istanbul Deputy Oğuz Üçüncü announced that they are preparing changes regarding the paid military service application that concerns citizens living abroad. According to Üçüncü, if the planned regulation is implemented, there may be a discussion about lowering the current fee.
APPLICATIONS REMAINED WELL BELOW EXPECTATIONS Following the new dual citizenship law in Germany, it is reported that approximately 1 million 300 thousand people have gained the right to obtain a Turkish passport, yet only around 30 thousand applications have been made so far. Üçüncü stated that economic reasons play a significant role behind this low interest.
AK Party Istanbul Deputy Oğuz Üçüncü HIGH FEES DETERRENTS CITIZENSHIP Speaking to Cumhuriyet, Üçüncü emphasized that one of the main reasons for the limited citizenship applications is the fee for military service in foreign currency. Reminding that the current amount exceeds 6 thousand 400 Euros, Üçüncü expressed that many people find it difficult to afford this amount. According to Üçüncü, some individuals prefer to continue their path solely with foreign citizenship to avoid military obligations.
"DIFFERENT FEE APPLICATION MAY CAUSE NEW DISCUSSIONS" Üçüncü noted that lowering the fee for paid military service in foreign currency is on their agenda, stating, "However, reducing the foreign currency fee to a certain amount may create a social discussion. Because, it should not lead to new debates that a different fee for people within the country and a different fee for people abroad."
