IRAN'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS SUMMONED THE SAUDI AMBASSADOR

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Tehran, Abdullah bin Saud Al-Anzi, to the ministry to "strongly protest" the executions. Karimi Shasati, the Director General of the Consular Affairs Office of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in his meeting with the Saudi ambassador, "The individuals in question were sentenced to death by the Saudi judiciary for drug trafficking years ago, and during this time, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has continuously made efforts to provide them with consular services and to reduce their sentences. However, the execution of death sentences without prior notification to the embassy is unacceptable and violates international legal rules and regulations, including the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations," he said.

IRAN'S PROTEST NOTE WAS DELIVERED

During the meeting, the "protest note of Iran" was delivered to Saudi Ambassador Al-Anzi, and it was requested that necessary explanations be provided by Saudi Arabia regarding this matter.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN IRAN AND SAUDI ARABIA RESUMED IN 2023

On January 2, 2016, 47 people, including Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr, were executed in Saudi Arabia on charges of "terrorism." Following a series of statements from Iranian officials reacting to the executions, the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and the consulate buildings in the city of Mashhad were set on fire by protesters in Iran. Diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were already strained due to the crisis in Yemen that began in March 2015, were completely severed.

Iran and Saudi Arabia had agreed to resume diplomatic relations after a meeting held in Beijing, the capital of China, in 2023, after 7 years.
