The indictment prepared by the prosecutor's office seeks a prison sentence of up to 4 years and 6 months for Övüç.
The investigation regarding the words spoken by social media phenomenon Murat Övüç in a video he filmed with a shawl has been completed. In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that the words spoken by the suspect Murat Övüç in his social media post were of a nature that could incite hatred and hostility between different segments of the public. The indictment noted that the suspect Övüç's words were discriminatory and incited hatred, and that his post had been shared multiple times by many accounts and groups, creating a media agenda. He stated that he filmed the video as a joke by covering his head with the shawl on his shoulder.
In the indictment, which included the suspect Övüç's statement, it was recorded that the suspect's fan base mostly consisted of women, that he filmed the video while he was on a plane, and that he said, 'What would look good on me, girl? Look, here you go,' while covering his head with the shawl on his shoulder, emphasizing that he did this only as a joke, that he came from a religious family, and that he did not accept the accusations.
IMPRISONMENT IS REQUESTED In the prepared indictment, it was requested that the suspect Murat Övüç be sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 1 year and 6 months to 4 years and 6 months for the crime of 'publicly inciting hatred and hostility.' The trial of the suspect will begin in the coming days at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance.
