Professor Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan, a geophysicist, made a statement on social media regarding the 4.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Gazipaşa district in Antalya, which was also felt in Alanya and Mersin.
"THE EARTHQUAKE WAS NOT WITHIN THE ANATOLIAN PENINSULA"
Recalling the 5 magnitude earthquake that occurred between Alanya and Cyprus on November 29, Ercan stated, "We experienced two 5 magnitude earthquakes within 4-5 days. These are the earthquakes we refer to as small earthquakes. The depth of these earthquakes being 32 kilometers indicates that the earthquake focus is not within the Anatolian Peninsula."
"NOT DESTRUCTIVE IN NATURE"
Ercan noted that earthquakes of this magnitude are not destructive, saying, "So where is this? This occurred in the region where the Cyprus arc is located, either on the African mainland or on the segment of the Cyprus mainland that dives under Anatolia. Africa is colliding with Anatolia at a speed of about 3 to 5 centimeters per year, stretching Anatolia. As a result of these tensions, fractures are forming at a depth of 32 kilometers on the diving African continent. We saw the effects of these fractures today. These magnitudes are not destructive for the structural quality in Turkey and the Alanya region."
"THE LARGEST EXPECTED EARTHQUAKE IN THE REGION IS 6.1-6.2 MAGNITUDE"
Speaking about the largest expected earthquake in the region, the earthquake expert said, "The largest expected earthquake in this region is 6.1-6.2 magnitude earthquakes. Even if earthquakes of this magnitude occur, there will be no destructive effect in Alanya, Manavgat, Mersin, Antalya, and Adana; it will only shake. Therefore, the public should not worry and continue their lives. A solid house on solid ground, and as I always recommend, obtaining land and building information documents and having them registered in the land registry. If we do this, we can be prepared for earthquakes in a fracture-free, defect-free, and immortal Turkey."
