In the Gaziköy neighborhood of the Şarköy district in Tekirdağ, it has been revealed that a strong smell of gas was detected a day before the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri. The residents are anxious due to the Ganos Fault, which has not experienced an earthquake for a long time.
Before the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri, a strong smell of gas was felt in the Gaziköy neighborhood, located at the exit point of the Ganos Fault from the Sea of Marmara, in the evening hours. Residents of the neighborhood stated that the smell particularly came from the direction of the Sea of Marmara and resembled the gas smell from a previous drilling incident in the village.
GAS WAS DETECTED IN THE DRILLING IN 2023
During a drilling operation conducted in Gaziköy in October 2023, a significant gas release was detected at a depth of 150 meters. Although the purpose of the citizen conducting the drilling was to find water, the gas that emerged drew attention in the area. Neighborhood Muhtar Ali Altıntaş emphasized that the drilling point is located directly on the Ganos Fault and stated that gas release is still occasionally continuing.
DENSE SMELL A DAY BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE
Gaziköy Muhtar Ali Altıntaş stated, "A day before the earthquake, a strong smell of gas spread in our village. We observed that it came from the Sea of Marmara. Since it resembled the smell of gas that emerged during the drilling operation conducted in October 2023, we did not worry too much at that moment. However, after the Silivri earthquake, this situation made us think. Because we realized that the gas smell could be related to the fault line. The effect of the smell lasted for 5-6 minutes," he said.
NERVIOUS WAITING ON THE GANOS FAULT
Altıntaş noted that the Ganos Fault extends from the Marmara Trench to the Saros Gulf and stated that the region has not experienced a major earthquake since 1912, but the anxiety in the neighborhood has increased following small earthquakes. Citizens living in Gaziköy expressed that they are more cautious regarding the activity on the Ganos Fault after past experiences and recent events.
