A striking statement has come from the White House ahead of the phone call scheduled for today between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin. Trump will speak with Putin today to discuss stopping the conflicts."
As the peace negotiations that began with the Istanbul summit continue amid the Russia-Ukraine war, the world is focused on the phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. It has been learned that the call will take place at 5:00 PM, and a striking statement has come from the White House.
WHITE HOUSE: THERE IS A STALEMATE ON UKRAINE
U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who held a press conference, stated, "There is a stalemate on Ukraine. If Russia is not willing to make peace, we will say, 'This is not our war.' Trump will speak with Putin today to stop the conflicts."
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov evaluated the current issues for journalists in the capital Moscow. Peskov noted that the phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump is planned for today at 5:00 PM (GMT+3), and he stated that the negotiations held last week in Istanbul between Russia and Ukraine, hosted by Turkey, would be discussed during the call.
"WE VALUE THE U.S. MEDIATION EFFORTS"
Peskov emphasized that Russia prefers to achieve its goals regarding Ukraine through political diplomatic means, stating, "We value the U.S. mediation efforts and are grateful to the American side for this. If these efforts help us achieve our goals through truly peaceful means, that is definitely preferred."
Evaluating the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Trump, Peskov indicated that this depends on the decisions of the two leaders, saying, "The meeting needs to be productive and well-prepared."
"THE ELECTION IN ROMANIA IS STRANGE"
Assessing the second round of the presidential election held in Romania yesterday, Peskov suggested that the election was "strange," stating, "We know the story of a candidate who had a chance to win but was disqualified without justification." Peskov mentioned that European countries such as France, England, and Germany interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
PEACE SUMMIT IN ISTANBUL AFTER PUTIN'S CALL
The historical summit was initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 11. Putin had proposed the unconditional resumption of direct negotiations, which had been cut off three years ago, in Istanbul on May 15, requesting President Erdoğan to host.
ZELENSKY ARRIVED, PUTIN SENT A DELEGATION
Following Putin's call, Trump also urged Zelensky to attend the meeting. The Ukrainian administration responded positively to the call. While Zelensky complied and came to Istanbul, Putin did not come to Turkey for the meeting but sent a delegation instead. Zelensky left Turkey after Putin's absence.
TRUMP: IF I DON'T GO, PUTIN WON'T GO
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that following Putin's decision not to come to Istanbul, he could go to Istanbul on Friday if necessary, saying, "I said if I don't go, Putin won't come, and I was right."
DELEGATIONS MET
Meetings took place between the delegations. In the trilateral meetings held under Turkey's auspices, Turkey-U.S.-Ukraine and Turkey-Russia-Ukraine, an agreement was reached on the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine.
EXCHANGE DECISION MADE
Speaking after the peace talks in Istanbul, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated, "We have agreed on the exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war with Russia." The Russian delegation expressed, "We are satisfied with the talks. Russia and Ukraine will present their views on a possible ceasefire in detail, and then negotiations will continue."
