Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was expelled from Israel while still wearing detention clothing. Thunberg stated that "very little food and water were provided" and that she "was subjected to harsh treatment" during her time in Israel.
The 22-year-old Thunberg had joined the Freedom Flotilla project with 437 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers who set out from Europe. Their aim was to deliver aid by breaking the maritime blockade that Israel has imposed on Gaza for 18 years. More than 40 ships participated in the flotilla.
According to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thunberg highlighted the harsh attitude of Israeli prison officials. Authorities noted that Thunberg complained of thirst and that insufficient food was provided. Additionally, Thunberg complained about skin rashes caused by bedbugs and being kept sitting on a hard surface for a long time.
Ersin Çelik, an activist from Turkey who participated in the project, said:
"They dragged little Greta by her hair, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They applied all kinds of pressure on her. This was a warning to others."
Most activists are being held in the high-security Ketziot Prison located in the Negev Desert. Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel stated that Thunberg is not in "prison" but in a "detention center." The Deputy Minister noted that the conditions are comfortable, but some claims may be for propaganda purposes.
