According to BDDK data, Kastamonu has become the wealthiest province in Turkey over the last 10 years. Deposits in the city increased by 3,338% over the past decade and by 873% in the last 5 years. While deposits across Turkey rose by 1,862% in 10 years, Ankara lagged behind in deposit growth. The province with the least increase was Hakkari.
The latest data released by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) revealed that the province that has become the richest in Turkey over the last 10 years is Kastamonu. Kastamonu ranked at the top of the country in terms of deposit growth in banks both in the last 5 years and the last 10 years.
KASTAMONU INCREASED BY 3,338% IN 10 YEARS
According to the data, the total deposits (in TL and foreign currency) in Kastamonu increased by 3,338% over the last 10 years and by 873% over the last 5 years. The total deposits, which were 2.2 billion TL in 2015, rose to 75.8 billion TL as of June 2025. With these rates, Kastamonu outperformed all provinces in Turkey.
DEPOSITS IN TURKEY INCREASED 20 TIMES IN 10 YEARS
According to BDDK data, the total deposits consisting of TL and foreign currency deposits across Turkey increased from 1 trillion 167 billion TL to 22 trillion 912 billion TL in 10 years. This increase represents a rise of 1,862%. In the last 5 years, the total deposit increase was 649%. The total deposits, which were 3 trillion 59 billion TL 5 years ago, have now reached 22.9 trillion TL.
ANKARA BECAME POORER, HAKKARI AT THE BOTTOM
The figures also revealed a striking picture. Ankara lagged behind in deposit growth over the last 10 years and entered the list of the 5 least wealthy cities. In the capital, deposits increased by 1,552%, rising from 171 billion TL to 2.8 trillion TL. However, Ankara's share of deposits in Turkey decreased from 15% to 12.3%. The province with the least increase in deposits was Hakkari, with an increase of 1,025%. Hakkari was followed by Zonguldak and Siirt.
OTHER RICH CITIES
According to a report in Habertürk, the other provinces that stood out in deposit growth after Kastamonu over the last 10 years are as follows: Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, Antalya, Iğdır, Çanakkale, Mardin, and Muğla.
